It's pretty humorous to see a manager making utility infielder money cited as proof the administration is committed to spend. I love Maddon and I'm glad we got him, but any manager contract is a drop in the ocean financially - $25 million over five years is meaningless as a sign of commitment. I'd like to think Maddon wouldn't have come aboard if he wasn't sure the Cubs were at least going to loosen the pursestrings enough to be a mid-market team, but it's foolish not to be skeptical of their intent to spend on salary until they actually do it. Finishing second on free agents and making waiver claims they know won't bear fruit are not proof of anything except an understanding of P.R.. Edited by Deeg

I will relax when we sign some pitchers and they aren't brandon mccarthy.

McCarthy is going to be one of the best signings this offseason depending on price.

For the 20-25 starts he'll make he better not be the grand prize for us.

Just fyi, but Derrick Goold (STL P-D beat) reported the Cardinals have no plans to host Lester for a visit.

Bernie Miklasz (P-D columnist) seems to be indicating that their interest is in Scherzer, if any of the SP's.

During his "Kap and Haugh" radio show Tuesday morning, CSN's David Kaplan shared the latest info he had from sources on the Cubs' pursuit of Lester:

"What I'm hearing is the Chicago Cubs have made a significant offer - significant north of $135 million," Kaplan said.

[RELATED - With money or prospects, Cubs will pay for elite pitching]

Kap also said he's hearing the Cubs' offer would be for six years.

So based on recent FA history, the winning team will just need to add a 7th year and an additional $1m AAV to best the Cubs. There will be at least one team that will be desperate enough to do that.

So 7/142

Forgot to add the extra year of salary.

Not that I have any faith in what Kap says anyways, but he stated the offer was significantly north of 135 million. If 6/135 was indeed our offer, an extra year + 1M AAV = 164.5 million

If we are indeed players on Lester and have a significant offer, we won't get beat on an extra $1M AAV. I hope they pass if a 7th year at 23mil (or more) is what it takes.

Price for AAV on Jon Lester's pending deals should exceed $25 million per season . (Industry source )

So we either believe Kaplan or a 14-year-old internet troll.

Now, we're sure they're different people, right?

they are not mutually exclusive reports

kaplan didn't say the Cubs were going to get him at that price, just that they offered.

Look, I'm not going to be able to make jokes about Kaplan being a 14-year-old internet troll if you're going to be unwilling to accept a few false equivalencies.

Kaplan is a Cubs mouthpiece. Wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs leaked this to him so that it softens the blow that he's returning to Boston

UPDATE: since hearing Red Sox 6/130 offer to Lester, Cubs have topped offer. Don't think sox want to negotiate.

Plus, there haven't really been any strong Scherzer rumors with anybody yet. Some hints that the Yankees may be lying in wait (but similar things have been said about the Cubs by random national media types), and that the Nationals may trade a guy to sign him, but no major smoke yet.

Is it also possibly because Scherzer is considered more of a fly-ball pitcher, and that might not bode well at Wrigley?

This kid supposedly had the Hanley or Panda deals before anyone, correct?

Yes. He's from outside of St. Louis, but apparently has some contact in the Red Sox FO.
