You're wrong, David. Kaplan has NEVER broken a story by himself. He makes up a lot of rumors and things he wants to happen, simply to get people to listen to him. How many Cubs stories he has claimed to have intimate knowledge on have turned out to be non-stories? But Kaplan has moved on to the next load of b.s.. He's not a journalist. He's not a beat writer. He's rarely in the clubhouse. He doesn't travel with the team. But we're supposed to believe everything he says over people whose jobs are to cover the Cubs. You don't see Len Kasper doing that kind of nonsense. Isn't Len more wired in than Kaplan?

Theo/Jed don't leak, unlike Hendry. They're professionals.

lol he totally just crapped on kaplan's meatbally (not that he's necessarily wrong on this one) rant about rose, questioning toughness of players, and how amateurs probably shouldn't comment on such matters

rose is kind of a special case in that i think the meatballs are kinda right at this point but i still enjoyed it

Kaplan said one of his sources was an agent and another was an east coast team official not associated with the Cubs. More than most people would even reveal. Why are you acting like every source has to be Theo Epstein to count? (Re: Felix)

Levine's unnamed sources are better because he provides direct quotes from his.

Hendry still works for the Yankees.

Like the one who said we were showing legitimate interest in Nick Swisher.

Why are you so gullible? That's revealing nothing. Give me a name or it's a mindless rumor.

Are you implying that Levine (and every other reporter - because that's how this works) doesn't do that?

The Cubs have wasted little time in their pursuit of becoming a contending team in 2015. After hiring veteran manager Joe Maddon on Monday, the team rolled out the red carpet in a meeting with free agent catcher Russell Martin on Thursday, according to an MLB source.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/11/25/levine-cubs-still-in-hunt-for-jon-lester/

The Chicago Cubs are still in the hunt for the services of free agent pitcher Jon Lester. A source with first-hand knowledge of the teams and negotiations involved told CBSChicago.com that there is still time in the process for all the clubs bidding on the left-handed pitcher.

“I can tell you the Cubs have been on top of this situation since the beginning,” said the industry source. “They have not gone away.”

The insider refused to predict where Lester would wind up, but he did confirm that the salary of the contract could surpass $25 million per season. Lester, along with Max Scherzer, are the premier free agent pitchers on the market (James Shields is third). The two 30-year-old pitchers and their agents will dictate where the market for number one starters goes this off season.

Bruce Levine

‏@MLBBruceLevine

Source-Free agent pitcher Jon Lester will visit Cubs for formal meetings and tour next week .

Hey look, unnamed source and that actually turned out to be true (actually, I'm not sure if Theo or someone else willing to be named actually confirmed this, so who knows if the meeting even really happened?!!)

I guess these are all mindless rumors. Don't bother paying attention until they hold a press conference then.

I can't recall the last time a journalist named one of their sources unless it was an on-the-record sit down interview for a profile on that person and the associated team/player. Rumors are never on the record because those sources would be outed and immediately fired or punished for leaking information, and if a journalist did provide a name then others wouldn't want to talk to them. Seriously I don't even know if I've ever a seen a journalist, in regards to offseason rumors, ever give a name on a source.

No one names sources. What is wrong with you?

There's a 99% chance one of those sources is Jim Hendry. So there's your name.

Some jackasses on Twitter saying Sox upped their offer to Lester and it now stands at 6/$145m.

Edit: This is reportedly a match of the Cubs offer to him.

Hearing Cubs offer to Lester is 6/$140. Currently the highest offer on the table for him.

Red Sox source said no truth to Cespedes/Reds deal or increased offer to Lester.

It *used* to be a thing that unnamed sources were used in very rare cases where both the reporter and his editor agreed that the story was too important to sit on and couldn't be gotten any other way. Like Watergate.

Anything less, and the reporter is putting their credibility on the line instead of the source's, and that was considered a bad move. It was just part of the reporter's job to convince the source to go on the record or find one that would.

But that seems to have more or less died the day the Internet was invented.
