The rationalization is starting to kick in and I'm thinking about how we'd still have a chance to be pretty good with a rotation of Arrieta, McCarthy, Anderson, Hendricks, Whomever.

And then go into next year when Zimmermann, Price, and Cueto are all free agents.

Maddux didn't even ultimately have an offer to take.

EDIT - or are we talking about to the Braves over the Yankees?

How much did he turn down again?

6 million, plus a 9 million signing bonus.

vs what from Atlanta?

Yankees offered 5/34 with 9 million upfront as a signing bonus. He signed with ATL for 5/28.

You're further along than me...even in resignation I'm hoping for Shields + McCarthy/Liriano

I don't even really want Shields that bad. He's so very, very old.

I just want the FO to show that they care even the slightest bit about winning at the major league level. Thus far they have not done that.

I think we already know they don't.

But we're getting close to the point where a decent MLB team might be a side effect of them doing the stuff they do care about.

Except for all the guys who sign extensions or have elbow or shoulder problems and drop off the market. Which only happens with "sure" next year FA targets what, every season?

plus they'll get too much money for too many years and be too risky so we should wait for 2017

Goodness, we can't make it 5 posts without histrionics about spending. Get a grip.

The Cubs' payroll has dropped $50m over a four-year span. Last offseason featured the front office voluntarily not spending money it was given. The result was yet another last-place finish.

Histrionics, as you call them, are warranted.

Because the Cubs weren't interested in winning, more developing talent. And that talent is starting to get here. Not spending money got us Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber among others, it'll all pay off. If they don't start spending soon though, I'll be with you.

They went out and spent money on Joe Maddon and Joe Maddon doesn't come here if the Cubs aren't interested in spending money these next few years.

Jackson or the Rizzo extension has to be the biggest contract Theo has given out so far

Fukudome and Dempster are close(and probably higher if you adjust for inflation), and same goes for Lilly who signed the same year as Soriano, but for raw dollars or AAV, you're right.
