Maybe I'm completely off here, but wouldn't Detroits return for Fister be the equivalent of Kyle Hendricks, Logan Watkins, and maybe Ben Wells or Zach Cates? If we're trying to get >W's with <$, Fister would have been a sweet acquisition at that price.

Think Edwards, Barney, and Parker.

Pierce, Barney, and Parker would be about right. Robbie Ray isn't in CJ Edwards' class.

There is no one as good as Edwards in that trade.

That's correct, but the Cubs don't have a great match for Ray in terms of stuff/performance, and Barney+Parker may have less value than Krol+Lombardozzi to the money-conscious Tigers. Plus in replying to a suggestion that Hendricks would be the headliner, I wanted to err on the other side with a proxy deal.

@Ken_Rosenthal #DBacks get RHP Justin Choate, player to be named, per source. Bell, Hanigan, $$$ to #Rays, Holmberg to #Reds, Choate and PTBN to #DBacks.

So Towers just gave away Holmberg for a 22 year old reliever with uninspiring numbers in Low-A, and a PTBNL.

Have we stopped to consider that Towers might be schizophrenic? Do other GMs call him by some type of Manchurian code name to make the crazy version come out?

EDIT: Forgot Heath Bell was in Arizona. So apparently he values Holmberg at about 5 million, since that's what they owe Bell. Less crazy, but still pretty crazy.

1:41pm: Piecoro adds that in order to shed the remainder of Bell's contract, the Diamondbacks are giving up something of value instead of taking on another bad contract (Twitter link).

If all they wanted to do was get rid of Bell's contract, they should've just traded him for a nobody prospect. I don't see why they needed to give up Holmberg, and surely someone would've taken a chance on Bell at the risk of giving up next to nothing.

Yeah, that's a bad deal for the DBacks. They're getting a PTBNL from the Rays, too, but I'm sure they could've found a salary dump deal instead of trading an intriguing young arm. I liked Holmberg as a second piece in a Shark trade, too.

A's trade Seth Smith to the Padres for Luke Gregerson.

I hope the Cubs go after one of Maybin or Venable.

That's a move I could get excited about. If he's healthy he's a pretty decent bet to be a 3 WAR CFer.

He scheduled all his finals for Monday so he can have a longer winter break.

The Padres adding an OF that is a FA after this year is kinda odd. I'd definitely be after Maybin, and maybe Blanks too(for very different roles, of course).

That's three trades now that are pretty clear salary dumps, maybe the TV money isn't flowing so freely after all.

From Denver Post via BTF:

[Monfort] also explained why he isn’t about to spend all that new TV money next year. He said he is planning to receive $8 million less, or $19 million, believing a chunk will be kept for baseball’s central fund to compensate for last season

...The $18 million is additionally siphoned, Monfort explained, to pay $5.5 million to the MLB credit line for past loans, $5 million for player raises and $3.5 million to cover projected revenue loss from not having the Yankees and the Red Sox play at Coors Field, series that drew huge crowds this past summer at inflated ticket prices. That leaves approximately $4 million to $5 million in “new” money, and the ability to add about $11 million to the payroll, he said.

That's some corporate style math right there.

Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that the Marlins have signed Jarrod Saltalamacchia to a three-year, $21 million contract.

WEEI's Alex Speier is hearing the same and says passing a physical is all that's standing in the way of a deal getting done. The Marlins had to offer a third year to lock up the West Palm Beach native, but a $7 million per year commitment isn't too outrageous. Saltalamacchia batted .244/.306/.457 during his three full seasons in Boston, averaging 18 homers and 60 RBI. Last season's .273 batting mark will certainly come down, but he'll still provide double-digit pop even in a big pitcher's park.
