The Cubs will be active in some way this winter, whether it be by making a trade, signing a free agent, bringing up a minor leaguer, or simply just thinking about doing one of these things. My sources---because I am close to major league people---say that one of the above options is inevitable. It will all just depend on money, interest, logistics, and organizational philosophy.

Brilliant!!!

Hey, we thought about doing something, then made a decision not to do it.

Please tell me that's a satire and I just didn't bother to read the last page of the thread or something, because that's the least insightful observation ever.

Did Heyman hack ABTY's account and make a post on PSD?

Evaluate the situation.

Sorry, I'm taking the under for 9 million being the new cost of a win based on this one deal. I don't doubt salary inflation, but I do doubt this deal as the new norm.

The worst part of this deal is that it probably pushes the Indians closer to giving Ubaldo the qualifying offer, if they were on the fence before.

how did i miss that he was basically the best pitcher in baseball, post-ASB??

Indians are sounding sure to give him the QO, FG crowd thinks he goes 4/49; that'd be tempting if we miss on Tanaka

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Angels could be willing to deal Mark Trumbo and/or Peter Bourjos for pitching.

Bourjos was limited to 55 games this season due to a wrist injury, but his defense in center field could make him popular in trade talks. With 95 homers over the last three seasons, Trumbo figures to be the more attractive chip, but he's not a strong defender and his on-base percentage leaves a lot to be desired.

I don't really care about Trumbo, but Bourjos is an appealing target for the outfield, IMO. I can't imagine he'd cost a whole lot, and he's just barely entered his prime. He might be my favorite buy low option if he's truly available. At the very least he'd be a stellar defensive stopgap if the Cubs don't target Choo or Ellsbury this winter

I'm thinking Ubaldo gets 5/75 or so in this market.

i am way too lazy to confirm this, but i seem to remember the fg crowdsource contract thing routinely underselling what people would eventually get. obviously, this is a year-to-year thing and they can all see their past results, so maybe this is the year they correct that and start nailing things, but i'm inclined to think ubaldo will do better than 4/49.

Last year's biggest SP deals:

Player Prediction Actual
Greinke 6/114 6/147
Sanchez 4/52 5/80
Lohse 4/52 3/33
Haren 3/36 1/13
Jackson 3/36 4/52
Dempster 3/36 2/27

So if the accuracy is similar to last year, if the crowdsource is predicting 4/49, 5/75 isn't a terrible guess. Fangraphs did add more to the crowdsource this year, with options for predictions and what they think they *should* get, so maybe this year will be a little closer to reality. How many of those people feel he'll get the qualifying offer is also a big factor.

Definite QO- McCann, Kendrys Morales(only because they've already said so), Cano, Ellsbury, Choo, Jimenez, Kuroda, Ervin Santana

Likely QO- Napoli, Drew, Granderson, Beltran

Possible QO- Nelson Cruz

I've seen stranger things if they were offered the QO- Saltalamacchia, Omar Infante, Juan Uribe, Bronson Arroyo, AJ Burnett, Haren

Pirates fans really want Burnett back. They won't offer for that type of money, but they love him.

we should get khalil greene

coincidentally, i think we were having this discussion the last time hoops was a poster

Man, I loved the Greene theory after 2007, but I had no idea that he was a psycho (that works with both him and Meph).
