im not saying i necessarily agree, but you might be able to find a team now that would pay for the hope that he's more 2011-12 than 2013. If you keep him and he hits .250 again, all that good will is gone and he won't fetch anything.

Since I have been away from this board for a long time, can someone bring me up to speed on what the conventional wisdom would have been on Castro's trade value if his 2013 campaign had been similar to 2012 & 2011 seasons? Just like many of your networks, my network has suggested that this Front Office wants to move him ASAP.

Uh, the value would have been incredibly high.

Yup. The whole one of Miller or Martinez being fair thing? It'd take more than both of them had he stayed the course/progressed a bit, IMO. At that point you've got a still developing 24-year old AS caliber SS signed to a very team friendly deal through 2019.

I'm split on whether or not to trade Castro now. I think he's more than capable of bouncing back, but if someone is willing to overlook and pay the kind of value he would've brought at the beginning of the season I'd have trouble looking away. And the only reason I'd consider it is because Baez is so close to the majors. If Baez wasn't in the system I wouldn't even think of it, honestly

Since we have no money again and aren't going to try again, why would you trade Castro at his absolute nadir rather than let him go out and hit for an empty average and then trade him for the 2015 run?

Because that will cost you $4.5m above the minimum while you let it play out.

Then our front office is stupid.

That's a bit harsh I think. A career .322 OBP is not impressive. But since he plays a deluxe position, I think they feel they can still move him for something compelling.

I'm a fan of OBP, but you don't just judge a 23 year old SS on his career OBP.

No, it's not. Being desperate to move a guy because of one bad season and because you're focusing on the flaws of his game rather than the strengths is the move of a stupid front office.

6 qualified SS had an OBP greater than .322. Two were above .333.

And castro wasn't one of them.

I wonder what you could have gotten for Jeff Francouer after his age-24 season.

Compelling? For a 24 year old who has already been an all star twice I'm going to need more than compelling. I'm not letting one year where he's completely reworking his plate approach jade me on his ability. Sure, he's probably never going to be the Hanley type we hoped for, but the old 3 WAR Castro was still a damn good player.

While I have doubts the Cardinals would do it anyway, I wouldn't be a fan of a Castro for Martinez swap. Love the arm, but the innings count would likely prevent him from being a full time starter for a couple years. Then you think about the velocity with that body size, I think we'd have a Neftali Feliz situation where we'd still be unsure if he can start after recovering from some sort of injury.

I don't know if they're being short-sighted, or just laser focused on acquiring top-of-the-rotation pitching potential. Edited by HoopsCubs

Can't say the same for goony. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

@cubsden Been told the Cubs plan to increase payroll by $25-$35M. Checking to make sure if that includes in-house raises (arb, extensions, etc.)

@cubsden @sahadevsharma We're talking about a $120M payroll or so, which is pretty much getting back to where they once were.

OK let's make up pretend rosters with a $120M payroll.

I honestly feel we'll struggle to reach that number if we even miss out on one major FA target. Unless we are also active with trades. Wonder if that 120 would include Soriano or not. Because to say $120 is basically where we were at would kind if indicate we're not including money being paid to former players, no?

If this isn't true I think my heart will explode.
