i don't know what the hell Maddon is doing but i love it

Im at the office and can only see bits and pieces of the game (with no sound,) so I have no idea what reasoning he's got for this crazy all star game approach, but I think it's [expletive] awesome that it's happening in the playoffs in an elimination game and is working so well.

Constant pitching changes. Hellickson loaded em up with no outs in the 2nd, brought in Jamey Wright who got out of it. Moore for 2 innings, Torres for 2 innings, I'd imagine he'll use 3 more to try to close it out

If the Rays win, Price could go on normal rest for game 5, so it's not really a huge risk. All he's really losing for game 5 is Matt Moore, and even he could probably go an inning then.

Pretty much the anti-Dusty Baker. No chance in hell he yanks Hellickson in the second.

Does anyone else wonder why baseball teams celebrate seemingly much more than every other sport? I have no problem with it as celebrating is awesome, but its weird when you compare a baseball team making the playoffs or win an early round series to a football team doing the same.

Picture heavy section of post:

For instance, this is a photo after the Rays beat the Rangers in a Wild Card tiebreaker game to set up the one game Wild Card playoff:

then 2 days later they beat the Indians to advance to the ALDS:

Now the Red Sox after beating the Rays in the ALDS:

Here are the Giants celebrating Lincecum throwing a no hitter in the midst of a terrible season:

Now here is the closest thing I could find to the Redskins clinching the division last year and making the playoffs for the first time in a few years:

And here are the Seahawks celebrating after beating the Redskins in the first round of the playoffs:

I chose football over basketball and hockey because its statistically harder to make the playoffs in football so its of course a bigger deal.

Again, I'm not saying this is bad, I'm just curious as to why baseball teams seem to have more of a wild celebration culture.

I remember the Sixers let off confetti like they won the title when they eliminated the corpse of the '11-'12 Bulls in the first round of the playoffs, and thinking it was ridiculously excessive... but yeah it's pretty tame compared with what goes on in baseball.

My guess is it has a lot to do with the fact that traditionally there weren't a lot of steps along the playoff route. Teams celebrated winning their league, then celebrated winning the World Series. Then they celebrated winning their division, because it was so similar to what it used to be like winning your league. Then winning the LCS and the World Series. Some teams have tried to downplay it when they go to the playoffs often, trying to make a statement about the World Series being the only thing that matters. But by and large, it is tradition to celebrate like that in baseball, and athletes don't really need a big excuse to party.

But you combine that with the fact that it doesn't really take much physical effort to play the game of baseball, so you aren't exhausted like you are after a football or basketball game. And the games and series last so damn long that it is a release when you win. Plus, the way games end just lend themselves to dudes going crazy on one side. The final out, or walkoff hit, are specific enjoyable moments that actually have to be completed in the course of the game, unlike taking a knee or dribbling around as the clock expires.

@MAppel26: I had to pitch against Gerrit Cole and @SonnyGray2 my sophomore year and I am not surprised that they are pitching game 5s. #dominant

What if it's because he trips and breaks his neck after hitting a game-winning GS?

I'm all for the Legue father/son duo rushing the field ala Tom Gamboa. The anti-Morgana kissing bandits

Come on pirates, don't let the cardinals ruin your feel good story like they did the natspos last year.

I blame Washington's ridiculous handling of Strasburg last year for that more than I blame STL. They were just the lucky bastards that got to play them.

Yeah that's true. I still wish a big leaguer would have got the big hit though, not Pete Kozma.
