Why is Don Mattingly starting Clayton Kershaw on short rest, up 2-1?

I have no idea and it sounds stupid but maybe because he'd rather have his best pitcher pitching at home, in a pitcher's park at night (where pitchers tend to fare better at Dodger Stadium)?

I know my explanation doesn't make sense, I was just trying to think of some way that it would even begin to be justified.

If the Pirates wrap up the other NLDS today, and the Dodgers win tonight, Kershaw wouldn't be available on regular rest until probably game 3, meaning he'd start game 3 and 7 instead of 1, 4 and 7. Yeah doesn't make sense.

The NLCS starts on Friday no matter what happens today, correct? That is how it is listed on the site and that is how it has been done in recent years. They have specific days they want games on the air. If he pitches today, that leaves him available on short rest for Game 1, or regular rest for Game 2, Saturday. If they lose tonight and he does not pitch, then he absolutely will pitch in game 5, which would be on an extra day's rest. And then he would not be available until game 3 of NLCS.

Seems like a lot of risk(3 days rest after 124 pitches) just to make sure he pitches games 2 and 5 instead of 3 and 6/7 (Game 6 would be 3 days rest).

Exactly what I was thinking. Apparently Mattingly also pitched his closer yesterday, up 7.

@BMcCarthy32: @gabekapler not a fan. Fatigue carryover may show up in later series. Huge inning load already- a wall has to be coming. Why expedite it?

Wrigley would be a morgue right now.

It kind of is right now.

Next year, if they were in the same situation as Pittsburgh is right now, I'm sure it would be quite lively.

It was throughout the 08 playoffs. Expectations were higher, but still, left a bad taste in my mouth.

"Throughout the 08 playoffs" was 2 days. They led for 2 innings then fell apart. This came on the heals, of course, of the 1 game they played in Wrigley Field during the 2007 playoffs, which was played with the team down 2 - 0 in the series already and a 2-0 deficit in the first inning.

Let's stop pretending Wrigley Field can't get raucous. With 5 increasingly depressing seasons since the last time they were in the playoffs, when they are fortunate enough to make it back, Wrigley Field will be quite lively.

Oh people are definitely spooked. But fans who want to sit on their hands should stay home, imo. Then again, playing that [expletive] Eddie Vedder song immediately after giving up several runs doesn't help.

It's hard to explain what that felt like in Game 1. Crowd was pretty amped. Everyone around me was loud. I had a single seat and was by myself so I was chatting with this father and son next to me the whole game. Then that Grand Slam happened. It just sucked the life out of everyone. The rowdiest super fan ever couldnt have brought that crowd back to life. The father and son stopped talking and eventually left in the 7th or 8th, not having said a word to me since the Grand Slam. Suddenly it felt like a late September game circa 2006, not a NLDS game.

I think its been a constant focus of their organization since their pitchers tend to die suddenly.

Why do you think it is a matter of fans who want to sit on their hands?

I was told to sit down by a group of pessimistic fans when I stood to cheer a late Fukudome HR. And the stadium barely made a peep.

If you're going to cry every time something bad happens, you're better off not attending.

Yeah, I remember how badly it sucked. I just can't handle the "oh noes the Cubs are losing again" sulking. You're at a playoff game.

I hate Michael Wacha and what he represents so much.

It kills me to see a fellow Aggie pitching so great for the [expletive] Cardinals.

We (as a fan base) spend all our time obsessing over draft position and place all our hopes in drafting specialists as our front office. The Cardinals are busy winning division titles and playoff games, and then in their spare time they get equal or better players to us drafting a dozen spots later.

Again, you are off base if you think this is an "every time something bad happens" thing. This was a fairly unique circumstance here.

There's a significant subset of Cubs fans who live to be miserable. They're awful people
