Close calls. The 76ers and Knicks actually played the night before (Oct 31st) in NY. The Flyers played at home the day before and after Nov 1st.

On October 31, 2010, the Giants and Rangers played in the World Series, while the Warriors, Mavericks, 49ers, Raiders and Cowboys all played. Missing were the Sharks and Stars who both played the night before and were off that day.

I'm reasonably sure it's never happened, mostly because I think the NBA opened a little later than the last week in October until relatively recently. And the World Series running into late October is also a relatively recent thing (wild-card era, maybe a little further back)

The Mt. Rushmore game is much more fun when you go city by city. Just doing the best in the major sports is boring because it's too broad. Cities are great because they have a much more limited pool and take some thinking ..for instance, Mt. Rushmore- Boston Sports edition.

Ted Williams

Larry Bird

Tom Brady

Pedro Martinez

Feel free to jump in on Boston, ignore this and move on, or throw out a new city.

Additionally, there is the whole NBA/NHL arena sharing that would typically prevent same-city teams playing the same day.

For Chicago -

Walter Payton

MJ

Ernie Banks for the Cubs - not sure who for the White Sox. Frank Thomas?

Don't know the Blackhawks' history very well so someone else can chime in there. Bobby Hull? Esposito?

Walter Payton

Michael Jordan

Ron Santo (Highest career WAR of any player in Cubs history other than Cap Anson who played his entire career in the 1800s. 9 WAR higher than the next closest, Banks, in 400 fewer games.)

Frank Thomas

Jonathan Toews (Already more Cups than Hull and he's only 25 years old. Will go down as an all-time great. Patrick Kane, for similar reasons, could also be considered. Bobby Hull is obviously in the discussion as well.)

I figured 2001 had a shot due to 9/11 pushing baseball back a week or so.

LA Mount Rushmore would be interesting.

Magic Johnson

Wayne Gretzky would be obvious.

But after that u have a ton of Dodgers, but have to pick an LA guy.....not Brooklyn. Koufax? (Started in Brooklyn), Fernando was huge at one point. Hershiser? Kirk Gibson? Puig? I'd go Koufax. Most of his career was in LA.

Then u have the Raiders and Rams who are not even there any more. Al Davis would be great but he took the team away. Most of the Raider greats are from the Oakland years....long or recent past. Best LA Raider would probably be Marcus Allen. Angels are kind of a 2nd rate team who didn't use LA in their name until recently.

Nice! Thanks for figuring that out. So close to all 4 at home too (which can happen in Phoenix with an NHL only arena)

My dream would be to somehow attend 3 different teams in a day. Like a Hawks game at noon (on NBC), Bears game at 3PM (random late game appearance), and Cubs World Series game at 7.

Hey, I'm not greedy. I'll settle for the Cubs world series game.

Plus Ted Williams is already there, and not having a Bruin is wrong. I'd pick Phil Esposito.

I'd go Kareem in basketball. His UCLA work puts him over Magic in LA, for me anyways.

Eh. Magic coached the Lakers at one point. He was the face of the franchise. He won a ring without Kareem. Oh and he is the most recognizable member of the group who owns the Dodgers who are looking like WS favorites in their 1st full year of ownership. Also an HIV ambassador. Hes Mr LA and has been for years.

God, I totally spaced on him coaching them. That's a tough one, I guess either one would work.

unquestionably bobby orr, if you included a hockey player. but it would be hard to leave out bill russell or red auerbach (if you're including sports figures, not just athletes).

for philly, if i'm choosing four sports figures without being required to include one from each of the major sports:

wilt chamberlain

julius erving

bobby clarke

mike schmidt

if i'm required to include a football player, then probably reggie white in for dr j. don't think the eagles have really had a standout player - probably their two best players of all time were white and chuck bednarik. and i suppose that steve carlton would be almost as good as mike schmidt.
