Personally, I'd replace Hockey and Gretzky with Muhammad Ali.

Yeah, for NFL, it's probably Payton with consideration for Montana or Johnny Unitas. It could even be a coach (Halas, Lombardi, Shula).

Payton is my all time favorite player but he's not the face of football for this. I'd pick a famous QB like Montana or a guy like Lombardi or Walsh.

Halas gets a lot of credit for inventing the NFL. Paul Brown would be another one. If it was going to be a player, I'd go with Red Grange who really legitimized pro football.
