for philly, if i'm choosing four sports figures without being required to include one from each of the major sports:

wilt chamberlain

julius erving

bobby clarke

mike schmidt

if i'm required to include a football player, then probably reggie white in for dr j. don't think the eagles have really had a standout player - probably their two best players of all time were white and chuck bednarik. and i suppose that steve carlton would be almost as good as mike schmidt.

Does anyone outside of Philly associate Chamberlain with Philly?

they probably should, considering that was born in philly, played high school ball there, and then played professionally in philly for half of his NBA/ABA career, including during his prime.

I figured 2001 had a shot due to 9/11 pushing baseball back a week or so.

LA Mount Rushmore would be interesting.

Magic Johnson

Wayne Gretzky would be obvious.

But after that u have a ton of Dodgers, but have to pick an LA guy.....not Brooklyn. Koufax? (Started in Brooklyn), Fernando was huge at one point. Hershiser? Kirk Gibson? Puig? I'd go Koufax. Most of his career was in LA.

Then u have the Raiders and Rams who are not even there any more. Al Davis would be great but he took the team away. Most of the Raider greats are from the Oakland years....long or recent past. Best LA Raider would probably be Marcus Allen. Angels are kind of a 2nd rate team who didn't use LA in their name until recently.

Let's be honest, the LA Mt Rushmore would never get finished b/c everyone would show up late and leave early.

I stand corrected.

Would LeBron be on the Miami Mount Rushmore already?

LeBron James

Dan Marino

Don Shula

Edgar Renteria? Alonzo Mourning? Al Leiter? Jeffrey Loria? D-Wade?

went to the AFL preliminary final last night between the fremantle dockers and sydney swans. it was a great atmosphere - freo's biggest game in their history. they came into the league in 1994 and have been bottom feeders for a lot of that time, and this game was their best ever chance to make the grand final (next weekend). they played like a house on fire for the first 3 quarters and took a lead of almost 50 points going into the 4th quarter, then put it on cruise control and won by 25. should be a great grand final next weekend. pretty much all thursday and friday flights from perth to melbourne are sold out, or priced above $1000 one way (normally about $250).

RIP Amy Dombroski.

To die like that such a long way from home...

Had to go look her up. Us dumb americans aren't real familiar with cyclers.

It's a cultural thing - cyclo cross is one of the two main sports here during winter (soccer is the other one).

It's on the front page of all the news sites over here - judging by the shocked reactions of the top riders, she was well-liked.

I just want to say that I love October for sports. Being able to flip from NCAA Football (OSU-NW), NBA (Bulls-Pacers albeit preseason), MLB playoffs (Boston-TB), NHL (Hawks-Lightning) all while being excited about the Bears game tomorrow afternoon is amazing.

While many of my teams are different, yes, it's the best month. Now only if the Cubs were playing.

I cannot imagine watching a minute of preseason anything at this time

Lets see if Rondo misses this whole season, how you'll feel about watching preseason next year.

Really could have done without the MLS ones. It's so obtrusive in the Chicago one too.

It was nice of you not to spew hockey hate on it.

Agreed....weird for the Chicago one to have the Fire logo being a major part, but you can barely see the Cubs and Bears in there.
