What are the logistics for the Cubs talking to Girardi, if that is what they want to do? I thought I read that his current contract runs through the end of October, so I assume the Yankees still have the first chance to negotiate with him and would have to grant permission for anyone else to speak with him.

They have to request permission to talk to him if it's before Nov. 1st, which they would likely allow. If there's really mutual interest, it shouldn't take long.

Call me nuts, but I really don't think Girardi is a Theo type. He's stubborn and not forward thinking in the least. I will be real disappointed if they hire Girardi. They need to find someone like Francona or Madden.

You've got it right, they need to ask the Yankees for permission to talk to him about the job before November 1. Considering that Theo all but guaranteed that the new manager would be in place before then, you'll likely see news about the Cubs asking the Yankees for permission to chat with him soon.

But if the Yankees have any interest in keeping Girardi, wouldn't they deny that request so that they maintain exclusive negotiating rights? Or would it be a case where Girardi makes it clear that he won't sign until he has had a chance to field other offers, thereby forcing the Yankees hand to grant permission to other clubs?

Outside of Maddon, is there really a name that would excite anyone? I just really don't care who the manager is as long as it's not a giant old timey meatball like Sciossia.

That statement makes it clear (imo) that they did not like how Dale handled the young players, and that was the primary reason for the firing.

I think the communication issues were outlined in Theo's statement as well. Like handling Castro's mental gaffes over the last 2 years, the situation with Gregg, Edwin Jackson and Shark the last couple of weeks, etc.

Obviously the development of Castro and Rizzo was the biggest deal but I thought this was interesting:

@sahadevsharma: Last month sealed Sveum's fate, IMO. Gregg incident stood out to me. And who gets on E. Jackson's bad side? Roster usage was suspect as well

I'm still intrigued with Dave Martinez, although his hiring would beg the question of why he wasn't even interviewed 2 years ago.

Girardi would excite me just because it'd make me think we were going to be active in FA/trading. On the other hand, he likes having control, so he may not be such a great fit with our FO. Even if he does have a good reputation working with young players.

The Yankees have little to gain by holding Girardi hostage for 4 weeks, aside from spite. He'll have the option to pick the Cubs come November anyway, if that's what he wants.

Still kind of surprised by this, as I don't think Dale is a bad manager. One question though - is it at all possible the idea to mess with Castro's approach in the first place came from Sveum and not Theo? Otherwise, I'm not sure I see the point in blaming him for that when there were two other hitting coaches on the staff. Rizzo can be party explained away by BABIP and Castillo made big strides this season.

It would just be trolling Ryno if they hired Martinez. So awesome.

They could hire Raffy and Sammy as hitting coaches.

I'm so jealous, the new manager gets to be friends with Javy.

Has it been confirmed that Javy will have input in the hiring process of what will likely be his first MLB manager?

A candidate emerges:

@JoseCanseco: Hey Theo @cubs I know what to do. I have won two world series since 1908. DM me.

2 weeks ago that wasn't a thought in my mind either.

First site of spring training would be 25 John Cenas getting off the bus.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan as bench coach.

I'm anxious to see some more names pop up beyond Girardi and Ausmus.

I'm not crazy about Girardi's history with young players either.

I dunno why Girardi has this reputation of working in young players. With the Marlins, he had no choice. That's all they had.

With the Yankees, young players constantly rode the bench & barring some injury to the veteran blocking them, they stayed on the bench. Dellin Betances is one of their top relief prospects & since being called up September 1st, he pitched 5 innings, most of which was when they were already eliminated from the playoffs 4 weeks after being called up.

No thanks to Girardi.
