On paper, I think Trestman is going to be a decent coach. Best case he's a genius. Worst case, he's just there and doesn't really matter. But when he talks, I think he's going to be a disaster. I'm seriously afraid of a mass team murder after a loss.

Yeah, I hear his pseudo-intellectual mumbo jumbo and just picture a clubhouse full of dude completely tuning him out.

Best case, he's a good HC because he does the strategy and leaves the communication/leadership to his coordinators. And it works out.

Worst case, it's the Crowton experiment, except as a HC instead of OC, and it's just a catastrophe.

Maybe one of the reasons he's never had a head coaching job in the NFL before? We know he has the offensive mind, but what the heck was that press conference today.

so long as he calls the right plays and leaves the inspiration to the veterans, he'll be ok, he doesn't need to be loved. there are a lot of meathead idiot coaches out there that give fantastic locker room speeches that can't call a play to save their lives. he doesn't need to be loved, he doesn't even need to be respected (except maybe by Cutler), he just needs the guys to run his plays.

that said, this kind of reminds me of the Alpo Suhonen experiment.

I mean... I'm not surprised by this, in fact, I was pretty sure of it about the guys on defense, but it's still not something you like to hear, especially said publicly.

"I think with him being in the NFL for so long and then being out of the NFL, when he got back in he got the chance he definitely wanted to do it his way," Cutler said of the former Canadian league coach. "Guys are buying in. Not everybody has bought in, but that's OK. We still have a lot of time. Hopefully by the time the first game rolls around, we have everyone on the same page."

Yeah, but Matt Abbatacola did tweet that the spin is that he just mis-used the phrase "bought in". He simply meant that not everyone was completely familiar with the playbook yet, which is more understandable.

Yeah, that would make sense, and would go more with what I remembered hearing him say on clips yesterday.

i picture Cutler not paying attention and looking in a different direction while saying that.

Football Outsiders:

How comfortable was Cutler behind last year’s line? Well, he had a DVOA of -1.7% on plays where he was marked “in

the pocket,” and a DVOA of 46.8% on plays where he was marked “out of the pocket.” That’s the biggest DVOA gap for any

quarterback with at least 300 pass attempts, and the kind of numbers that will make coaches start thinking about screen passes

to quarterbacks out of the Wildcat. The Bears went “max protect” on 16.3 percent of all passes last year, second behind Washington. (“Max protect” is defined as using at least seven blockers with at least two more blockers than pass rushers.)

@ESPNChiBears

McClellin acknowledged that some of the veteran players might still be in the process of buying into Marc Trestman's way of doing things.

Holy [expletive] is Trestman a weirdo. I just heard the press conference. He sounds insane

That's what we are talking about. I don't think anyone here gives a flying [expletive] about the man's personality, but the question is whether NFL players will care.

I'd love a Super Bowl winning geek for a coach. It's not about me though.

I really hope he isn't bringing the press conference type of speech into the meeting room. The rambling about lunch buddies, godfathers and swimming was ridiculous. I obviously don't want a meatball type of head coach, but I can say I've never heard a coach speak like Trestman.

The Chicago Bears quickly filled their roster void created by the expected retirement of defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis on Thursday by signing veteran defensive end Jamaal Anderson.

Cutler and Mannelly on The Score with Zach Zaidman until 7pm.

It's pretty good.

Love Bennett.

“I try to eat with (Cutler) as much as possible. I try to talk to him, drop by his room, even if it’s not about football; let him get to know me as a person,” Bennett explained. “He knows my background, and he knows I’ve got to feed my family. I’m helping him feed his family and we all understand that. I think it takes your game to another level. If you get personal with the wives and everyone’s family, their kid(s), you’ve got to go a little bit harder (on the field) for their family and those guys as well.”

But is Cutler open to that?

“Everybody’s open to that,” Bennett said. “Me and my wife are probably two of the coolest people in the world. It’s like Jay (Z) and Beyonce, then it’s me and my wife, then, it’s David Beckham and Victoria.”
