U-T Padres ‏@UTPadres

#Padres RHP Andrew Cashner has apparently been injured in a hunting accident. More details later, but reportedly not major injury.

Never been one to care much about the Rule 5. It gets a decent amount of attention, and most (obvious exceptions) never amounts to much for most teams. Fun to pay attention to, but that is typically about it.

I'm with you 95% of the time, but this year feels a bit different.

I'm halfway expecting us to trade the pick, after some speculation on that. Houston evidently is planning on making multiple picks.

Wittenmeyer said Marmol has been told to expect to open the season with the team and be traded at the deadline.

So we're already planning the firesale. *grumble*

Theo traded Nomar and Manny at the deadlines in years the Red Sox were going for it.

Good point. Grumble temporarily withdrawn.

I'm guessing that wasn't his plan 8 months prior.

Me too. Basically, the past several years we've grown accustomed to being in the mix for all of the top tier free agents. However, now the mentality has been altered to stocking the farm system and aquiring the highest reward reclamations possible. Kind of like growing up upper class, but dad was laid off and started a new job at a lower level, but an upstart company, so there's room for him to move quickly through the corporation. However, for now, we're learning to appreciate bargain bin DVDs and candy bars for christmas, and if we get a $20 I Tunes card, it's a pleasant surprise.

Angels signed Sean Burnett, 2 years $8 mil

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports that Sean Burnett will receive $8 million over two years on his new deal with the Angels.

The deal also includes a $4.5 million team option (or $500,000 buyout) for a third year. It's not a bad signing given that Burnett was originally looking for a four-year deal and winds up getting one fewer year and $10 million less than Jeremy Affeldt. The southpaw held left-handed hitters to a .211/.245/.289 slash line in 2012.

And they also signed Joe Blanton to 2 years $15 million.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com hears that Joe Blanton's deal with the Angels is for two years and $15 million.

Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register says the deal also includes a team option for a third season. Previous reports said that the pact was only for one year, but apparently that's not the case. Blanton posted a 4.71 ERA in 2012 for the Phillies and Dodgers, which was his lowest mark in three years. It's possible that the Angels could still be in the hunt for another starter even after acquiring Blanton and Tommy Hanson, but this should effectively rule them out for Zack Greinke.

Blah.

I really hope there isn't some stupid NTC in there (and I know our FO doesn't hand those out) in return for some loyalty discount or some crap like that.

If we get him, I want to be able to trade him.

I want a rotation with five guys with reasonable expectations of FIPs below 4

I just don't like him very much. Edwin Jackson or McCarthy, please.

Garza/Samardzija/Dempster/Baker/Feldman with Wood and Vizcaino waiting as 6/7? That looks like a rotation that can put us in the variance range, while still having valuable trade chips if things go south.

EDIT: I feel the same way if you replace Dempster with Jackson or McCarthy.

I'd love Edwin Jackson.

Garza/Samardzija/Jackson/Feldman/Baker is solid, and as Vanilla said above, even if we trade a couple the rotation could add Wood/Vizcaino and would still remain pretty good. This would be infinitely better than last year watching Rusin, Germano and Raley get shelled.

ETA: Also a big fan of McCarthy but Jackson is more durable and that is very important.

Add Dempster and one of Grilli/Adams and suddenly I'm feeling pretty good about the pitching staff in 2013.

Add a bat one way or another, and we could be looking at a fringe contender, one that would have minimal effect on the future plans, aside from the sucking for 2-3 years part.

Agreed. It's a team that's interesting, but if they happen to bottom out then we can just gut it at the trade deadline because they're all short contracts.
