who knows how much of a relationship te'o thought they were in. the SBT did pull the story with a lot of talk about them being a couple, some of which wasn't directly sourced to anyone. whether that's b/c they think they were duped or b/c they took some poetic license with the info they had, i don't know.

what? he didn't know they were in a relationship when he kept calling her his girlfriend to anyone who would listen and he thanked her family for their support of him on national tv? and now you're saying that it's the media that invented the relationship?

what?

The only way I don't find this hilarious is if he's covering up being gay (I'm not seeing that one myself though). Even if he was Catfish'd, I don't really feel bad for a guy who's about to be in the NFL and will have further opportunities for poon.

http://www.thebiglead.com/index.php/2013/01/16/anonymous-notre-dame-football-player-he-manti-teo-lied-but-the-media-blew-it-up/

Jackie Pepper has an exclusive interview with an anonymous football player with Notre Dame who says that teammates were suspicious as far back as September about his dead girlfriend. The source does believe that the lie may have started with someone else duping the eventual Heisman candidate, and faking a death. Then, the story continued to grow after the Michigan State game. The anonymous player said that teammates knew that Te’o had reportedly only met the girl once.

“We would never bring it up. But we would look at him when he would get all emotional during media about his girl,” the player said.

When asked if he thought Te’o was a good actor, the player replied, “Very good.”

I and many others found his aggressive attempts to force the tragedy narrative down our throats while he was doing it to be gross and if what actually happened is that he didn't know she was fake but used her to draw attention to himself, he deserves every bit of criticism and heartache he'll face.

I still think the best case for him is the gay beard angle.

My money is on Lennay Kekua being Ronaiah Tuiasosopo's cross dressing identity. We'll start hearing stories about how Te'o remembers Lennay's gun digging into his hip.

Everybody talking about being Catfish'd. I never did see that movie. Kinda feeling like I need to.

what really cracked me up is when the AD or whoever it was yesterday was like "HAVE YOU GUYS EVER SEEN THE MOVIE CATFISH" like it was some masterstroke when uhhhh that was a phony documentary invented by guys to gain publicity

Just DVR one of the episodes on MTV, it will save you a good 30-45 minutes of sitting through the whole movie as you can fast forward through commercials. Every episode is basically the movie (it's produced by the same guys who made the movie/the original dude who got "catfished").

I get that he could be embarrassed about having an online girlfriend... But then why tell people about her voluntarily, when you know you're too embarrassed to tell the truth anyway?

Because he was a football player surrounded by friends talking about the women they've banged.

Among acquaintances, fine -- but to the media? Puzzling and unnecessary.

In this age of communications, it's unreasonable to believe that if he had a girlfriend on the other side of the country that they wouldn't go to some form of visual conference to close the gap on the miles between them. Skype has been around for quite some time and isn't the only form of visual communication.

In other words, I could reasonably believe someone got conned 15 years ago. That he actually met someone once that didn't match the pictures on her online accounts would be suspicious by itself. To never fly to meet one another between school sessions or during a holiday break and never see one another outside of a still photograph should scare off anyone.

It's asking a lot to make us all believe he courted this girl for that length of time via twitter and phone calls only.

HOLY [expletive]:

Talhotblond is an 2009 documentary detailing an Internet love triangle which resulted in a real life homicide, in a case called the "Internet Chatroom Murder." Thomas Montgomery (screen name: marinesniper), a 47-year-old married man, pleaded guilty to murdering his co-worker, 22-year-old Brian Barrett (screen name: beefcake). The two men were involved in a love triangle with "Jessi," an 18 year old girl whose screen name was talhotblond. While the two men knew each other from work, neither had ever met "Jessi" in person. However, "Jessi" was a real person, but it was actually her own mother, Mary Shieler, who was posing as her own daughter online. Jessi was unaware of her mother's actions till after Barrett had been murdered and her mother's role in the case became widely known.

That is nuts.

Basically. If he was somehow inexplicably duped in all of this then he's some kind of weirdo freakmonster.
