Again, we know he was making crap up and telling it to others. At the very least, he was making stuff up to tell his parents.

So how much of a stretch is it to go from he made up parts of it to he and some other guy made up the whole thing?

Him being completely innocent in this simply isn't true. He made up some of his own details and told them to at least his family.

Fabricating details of a physical relationship because you're embarrassed about your e-girlfriend to your parents and probably teammates is quite far removed from being complicit in a massive public relations hoax.

You're missing the point - by making up parts of the story and letting that go viral, he was complicit in a massive public relations hoax. He WAS the author of parts of this story.

Well yes that would be complicity. Except that the Manti as naively duped theory is predicated on the notion that he didn't know he was being duped until December.

Doesn't matter. He was spreading his portion of the lies well before that. If nothing else, he certainly didn't stand up and correct anyone on any details. He went along with everything reported in the media and never corrected them about any of it.

In other words, he was complicit in the hoax. There is no path here that leaves him completely innocent and naive. He lied and fabricated part of the story that became famous. It's only how big a liar he is that is in question.

Did Manti have a roomate?

Because I'm pretty sure if I had a roommate that was in an online-only relationship for that long I'd make sure they at least skyped so he could be sure it wasn't a fraud. The roommate would have been privy to the late night calls, etc.

He didn't have any friends that tried to clue him in on trusting that people online are who they say they are?

Hell, I taught my own kids how to spot this kind of thing when they were around 10.

Can we make a rule where you have to actually read anything about a story before commenting on it? And we'll call it the "Tim Rule?"

I mean, Sammy Sosa corked his bat, so he's a known cheater.

Um, I would say it does matter if he really believed that his presumptive girlfriend died of cancer or not.

So you believed Sammy when he said he wasn't aware the bat was corked?

Hey, if he's in on the whole thing he deserves everything he's got coming. But lying about details of a physical relationship with a girl he thought died of cancer and lying about the girl entirely are a lot different on the scale or moral awfulness.

Based on the timeline, he was lying about the nature of their relationship before the whole death thing.

The point is if you're not going to take the time to learn anything about the story, don't waste people's time asking if he had roommates, when it's been reported everywhere that he has. Or are we now implicating his roommates in the hoax too?

Yeah, with the giant assumption that was he was naively duped, only because he was embarrassed that he only knew the girl online and over the phone.

0 for 2. A big part of many people's arguments regarding Sosa's potential steroid use was that he cheated by corking his bat, so obviously he had no problem using steroids. Similar to how I'm likely to commit murder because I speed.

And if this lie about the nature went on in perpetuity nobody would give a [expletive] except to make him a punchline for being an socially inept weirdo, so why is it you're so outraged over that part of it?

Sorry, that particular detail escaped me in the flood of info. Characterizing me as having read nothing about it because I don't know one detail is pretty ridiculous, though.

If he ends up having to come out as a result of this, it'll be very interesting to see the fall-out obviously. Honestly, I think thats where this is heading. Is he a sympathetic figure at that point or a flat-out liar? Mixed perception galore, in all likelihood.

Again you don't answer the question I asked. When Sammy was caught with the corked bat but claimed he didn't know, did you believe him?

I'm not taking Te'o lying about one thing and then saying that since he lied about something else years ago that he must be lying now. I'm saying he's lying about the very thing under discussion and therefore has little to no credibility about the rest of his claims on that particular story.

Seeing the Megahan Tweetstorm, it really does look like Manti was fooled and lied to his parents.

I vaguely wonder how much of a story this would be if ND had gone 8-4.

Doesn't make sense to me why Teo would come out tomorrow, the day after the ND AD went on record at the press conference that T'eo knew nothing about this (after he had personally sat down and talked to Teo). If Teo being gay is true, then he'd clearly be fully in on this hoax.

Based on everything i've gathered (especially some of those prior twitter convos with people making jokes at Teo's expense), my best guess is that Teo was legitimately duped. But, there's a decent chance he's still at fault since things point to him finding out it was a hoax in December, yet not telling anyone and still going through with the interviews, etc. He probably contemplated telling people, creating a big ****storm right before the National Title game, and looking like a dumbass (which he still will); or just hoping it faded away with time (and probably only mentioning to close family). Telling people would obviously be the moral thing to do, but you can probably see his logic behind just hoping it became a forgotten story.

Just my 2 cents on it. Though him being friends with the guy who ran her profile could be cause for suspicion.

It's that last sentence there that seems beyond your grasp. I realize when you edit that out of existence it makes things less clear. Unfortunately for you, it was still on the page two posts up.

Since this concept seems difficult for SSR to grasp, I made a handy venn diagram.

-----------------------
| | |
| lie | |
| | |
------- |
| |
| ??? |
| |
| |
-----------------------

The smaller box is the part of this overall narrative on whether he had met her in person. The larger box is obviously representing the overall narrative. We know he lied like crazy about the little box. Given that we know that to be the case, it certainly diminishes his credibility when he says anything about the rest of the story.

So to keep this all straight, the ND fans think that Te'o is a exaggerating dummy. ND haters think he is a lying dummy at minimum but possibly a huge lying scumbag. So it is either bad or really bad. Can't seem to get my mind around how he is not complicate in some level of some fraud.
