Backs need SS/3B help. While Baez and Villanueva would be a nice package for them, there's no way that's better than the Andrus/Olt package Texas can certainly offer without hurting them in the long or short run

An Andrus/Olt package might be the trump card, but I think we could match it or top it if we offered Baez/Samardzija/Barney for Bauer and Upton. Not that I'd do that trade, but if we were to make nearly everyone available and Theo really wants Upton/Bauer

I'd do that trade (assuming Upton doesn't have some sort of degenerative shoulder issue). As much as I like Baez, if they think his plate patience issues may never resolve themselves, it might be worth trading him before he's further exposed. Getting Bauer and Upton would be a perfect example of the type of undervalued assets Theo/Jed are always talking about.

I'd hope to get another prospect arm in there though. Feel like the Cubs are giving up slightly more in terms of pre arb years.

On the subject of the 3-4 teams that are realistic trade partners for us, I see 3 with an enviable glut of young pitching on their depth chart:

Braves:

Medlan

Minor

Beachy

Hanson

Teharan

Delgado

Jurrjens (reclamation)

They also have Maholm and Hudson for 2013, giving them many moveable parts.

A's:

Milone

Anderson

Parker

Peacock

Griffin

Straily

Gray

Cole

Ross (low risk, decent reward)

Also have Bartolo back in the fold. Again, plenty of moveable parts

D Backs:

Bauer

Skaggs

Bradley

Corbin

Collmenter

Miley

Hudson

Cahill

Kennedy

The top three would obviously be very costly. Corbin, Miley, and Collmenter would be very realistic targets. They have a strong, young big league 1-3 in Kennedy, Hudson, Cahill, giving them no shortage of depth.

Completely agree on the Braves being a potential trade partner. See the article linked below from today's AJC:

Would Soriano + cash + a mid-level prospect be enough to fetch Delgado this time around? It would certainly fill a big need for the Braves with Prado moving back to 3B.

Didn't see anyone post it yet... from the latest MLBTR update on Chicago...

The Cubs have reached out to Jeff Samardzija about a multiyear extension, reports Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. Samardzija, who enjoyed a breakout year in 2012 in his first season as a starting pitcher, is arb-eligible for the first time this winter and is under team control through 2015.

The proposed trade between the Angels and Cubs and would've brought Dan Haren to Chicago indeed fell through due to the Cubs' concerns about Haren's recent injury history, reports CSNChicago.com's David Kaplan.

Haren denied that he was injured in an e-mail to Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times. “I’ve never missed any time because of injury other than the three weeks this year because of my back," Haren said. "When I came back, I had to be cleared by doctors, so obviously, I was healthy."

Apparently, Jim Bowden has reported that we have an offer on the table for Liriano. Haven't been able to track it down online other than other people talking about it, though.

Jordan Campbell ‏@Jordan_FSCC

#Cubs reportedly have an offer on the table for starting pitcher Francisco Liriano, and submitted a bid for Ryu.

Why would you want to sign Liriano to a 1 year deal? That doesn't serve the Cubs any purpose except helping to make sure Nick Struck isn't in the rotation at some point.

1 year guaranteed I said, I'd like him so sign a similar deal that we got Maholm on last year (1 year + option year). Get him on a 1 year deal, hope he pitches close to something like he did in 2010 and flip him at the deadline for a few good prospects.

he's not due to command a significant annual salary, so you try to get the longest commitment you can from him and hope that with vastly improved instruction he'll make good on his considerable talent again

what other available pitchers are capable of 1 BB, 15 K games?

This was posted last night. I mean, he's a dime a dozen reliever. I'd be fine with a one year deal worth $1 mill or so but that's about it.

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Cubs are "making a big push" to retain Shawn Camp.

Camp is the team's lone free agent. The veteran right-hander posted a 3.59 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 80 games for the Cubbies this season. He'll likely receive a modest one-year deal.

Sveum likes him a lot evidently. Either way, if you sign him, wait til the end of the offseason. The extra 40 man flexibility means more than he does right now.

Yeah, he's fell of a cliff but still shows flashes of what could be. He's an ideal buy low candidate, though I like him less than McCarthy or Marcum. I'd have to think 2 years with a club option 3rd year (that could kick in with incentives met) would be an appropriate contract length for him.

Rather than worry about efficiency and fiscal responsibility, the Dodgers have decided to just sign every player leaving every other organization unable to field a full team.

Cue the Onion article about the Yankees signing every player in baseball.

I was thinking about putting put a free agent contest page again this year, but making the dodgers the only team you could pick as a destination.

They want Torii Hunter as insurance for Crawford, Kemp, and Ethier. Coletti said yesterday he has a "rough idea" of what their payroll can be, then added they've not been told "no" on anyone they've asked management about and that the payroll figure could go higher if unforeseen players became available.

ABTY mentioned a while ago the Cubs have McCarthy, Liriano, and Villanueva all leaning towards signing with them.

Several scouts told me that anything north of 12M for posting on Ryu was 'absolutely ridiculous'... One went as far to say: 'that 25.7M is already a sunk cost... adding even a nickel to his actual contract is completely asinine'

Another note: One source said that Villanueva, Liriano and McCarthy are all likely to sign with the team- none are 100% or even 80 but at this stage all seem to be leaning towards accepting Cubs offers...

Also, according to ABTY...

Cubs have had discussions with the Indians about Lonnie Chisenhall and Ubaldo Jimenez, possibly in the same deal... just GM Meetings talk, nothing concrete...

ABTY will be at the winter meetings, so that'll be fun.
