Interesting tidbit from Cafardo

The Phillies, Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles, Cubs, and many more are inquiring on rightfielder Giancarlo Stanton, a major league source tells Cafardo. However, commissioner Bud Selig is watching the situation closely after the club's colossal salary dump in the Blue Jays deal. He didn't move to block that trade, but he may not be fond of a deal for the Marlins’ biggest draw.

Doubt anything happens, but it's fun to speculate. I'd have to imagine a deal for Stanton has to include Baez. I'd be okay with that.

It has to include Rizzo, I think, and then a whole lot more.

I'd send any group of 5 minor leaguers they'd want(with Soler and Almora not being able to be dealt yet). In the end though, my guess is Castro, not Rizzo, would be part of the deal.

Looking at their organization, Rizzo makes more sense. They seem pretty set at SS, but Rizzo solving 1b for the next six years would be a nice piece for them.

Of course, any Stanton trade involves multiple key pieces, so it may not be an either/or.

We could have sent them LaHair instead of Rizzo if they needed a 1B. :yahoo:

With Castro, Rizzo, and Stanton as a foundation, we could end up with a very good team for a very long time very soon.

Just pulling this out of my ass, but maybe Baez, Vogelbach, Szczur, and any two trade-eligible prospects (even if they wanted Johnson or Blackburn as a PTBNL) for Stanton and Jacob Turner.

Scratch that, just make it Baez or 1 of Soler or Almora (PTBNL) plus any 4 guys in the entire organization other than Castro, Rizzo, or the other 2 of the Baez/Soler/Almora group.

Not even close to enough.

Is there something in the new CBA that says we can't have guys like Soler and Almora be PTBNL anymore? I see a lot of people say "They're ineligible to be traded for another year". Isn't that what PTBNL tags are for?

A PTBNL has to be named and traded in 6 months; neither Almora or Soler would be eligible to be traded in 6 months.

EDIT: Other tidbit relating to next year. Cubs stretching out Michael Bowden in the DWL...

May as well. If he's going to end up as filler, he's more valuable as a 5-7 starter than taking his turns through the revolving door that is 5/7 of the Cub's bullpen.

You are not getting Giancarlo effing Stanton for anything short of Castro +, or Rizzo/Baez/Shark/etc. Dude is probably one of the 4 or 5 most valuable assets in all of MLB.

It might be cheaper than you think. Given his reaction to the recent fire sale, everybody knows that the Marlins have no real ability to extend Stanton. Sure, they can keep him around a couple season to extract some merchandise sales, but it's just a matter of time until they're forced to trade him. All you have to do is outbid the competitors for the right to pay him as he begins to get expensive.

There were five position players 23 and under who posted better fWARs than Castro this season. I really don't see how you can seriously claim he's one of the top 4-5 most valuable assets in all of MLB.

How many of them played shortstop?

WAR is adjusted for position.

This is a pretty irrelevant tangent, but Castro is the only one signed for 7-8 more seasons. I'm also skeptical of Jason Heyward's ability to be 30 runs better than Castro on defense + baserunning in future seasons(same with Moustakas +17 and Andrus/Harper +12)

Given the aging curve of SS's, I'm not entirely convinced having him signed for 7-8 more seasons is actually that great as opposed to just having 4-5 more years of team control.

Even if you wanted to take out the defense and baserunning numbers entirely, Heyward and Harper came in ahead of Castro.

And of course, I missed Stanton himself because I forgot to turn off the "qualified" filter. If someone wanted to say Castro was one of the top 15-20 assets in all of baseball, I'd be right on board. But top 4-5 is pushing it two steps too far.

Stanton is just on a whole other level from Castro.

While true, I figure the Marlins would be looking for young major leaguers or at least guys that are very close. Hell, Selig may force something like that on them, if they deal him, since he's supposedly pretty pissy about their selloff. At any rate, we'd be in much better shape on this next year at this time. Baez and Soler could each have half a season of AA under their belt by then. Baez is from Florida, they'd have Soler for the Cuban contingent. Almora and Vogelbach are both Florida kids too. A package of 2-3 of that group at this time next year could be extremely hard for other teams to beat.

Fan graphs pegged Stanton at 5 and Castro at 41 (pre extension)

Yea, but IIRC, Dave Cameron compiled that list. And Dave Cameron is a [expletive] moron.

That said, Kyle is right. Castro is not top 5.

And before anyone else mentions it, the list is far from perfect, and no, no I would not trade Rizzo for Yadier Molina.
