Even if it's precautionary, that saps some trade value and gives other teams some leverage in Fred talks. Damn.

What's the deal with trading a player on the DL?

Can it be done? Does the other team have an obligation to keep him inactive for the remainder of the 15 days or is it up to their discretion?

I know they can be traded, pretty sure the DL carries over.

Even if this is purely precautionary,.the problem is that his recent great starts are devalued because he will have to come back and prove that he is healthy. Then if he has a couple poor starts, his value is shot. This is horrible timing.

Regardless, even if he does Dempster has quietly been one of baseball's more consistant mid rotation starters since he was put in the rotation. Even last season, take away the first month and his final start and he was very effective.

The main problem now is that by the time he is ready to return, Greinke, Marcum, and maybe even Hamels could be on the block. I wonder if we could sell any of the teams in need of a starter sooner than later could be interested in Maholm. He's been a solid enough back end guy, and it's not like their are many guys available at this point.

David Kaplan @thekapman

"Lat tightness is another term for don't you dare get hurt while we finalize a trade and your stock is sky high."

I'm with Kaplan, I think this deal is almost done and they're just discussing how much money the Cubs will have to cover to get the second prospect they want.

So if the deal is almost done, and he's fine, why would the Dodgers want him to be DLed, and unavailable to him until July 1?

If a trade is close, why not just skip his next start? What team wants to trade for a pitcher just put on the 15 day DL? Missing 3 starts is huge to a team in a playoff race.

Firstly, the DL would be retroactive so he wouldn't miss 3 starts. Secondly, DLing him opens up a roster spot while the trade is being ironed out. Lastly, working on the money or secondary parts may take a few days still. Maybe I'm wrong, but this is a lot of smoke.

So his new team misses out on two of his starts, and the Cubs get an extra roster spot to use for a few days that they wouldn't have had otherwise.

What's in it for his new team?

A little more salary relief in exchange for a missed start? I don't know. This whole "trade is imminent" scenario seems like a long shot to me, but who knows.

You think the Cubs safeguarding themselves by putting Demp on the DL is going to cause the Dodgers to void the deal? I really doubt him missing one extra start and pushing the his first back a couple days is going to be a huge deal. I mean if you figure the secondary things take a day or two to figure out, then you have all the physicals he's really only going to be on the DL for like 7 or 8 days after he's traded.

The secondary things are what PTBNLs are for.

If a deal was done all but the secondary things, why don't they just pull the trigger immediately? Why not wait a few days, skip his next start but don't put him on the DL, and then make the trade?

How does his new team benefit from this maneuver rather than just making the trade now?

This seems way too...sketchy. Doesn't sound like a real injury. Something else has to be going on here, possibly a trade in sight. Though, as others have said, why DL him instead of pushing his start back?

 I find it easier to believe this is a for-real minor injury than all the fakery some are hoping for. Demp's even made statements about how he's not gonna throw for a few days. is he in on the conspiracy too?

I'm sure if the speculated scenario is real then he is on it. If the Cubs DLeda guy who wasn't hurt they'd be breaking rules.

@BleacherNation: RT @JordanBernfield: Demp said he is better, but would have had to miss at least 2 starts, so DL smart decision. Won't throw for few days

Sounds to me like an is what it is minor injury.

What was Chris Reed put on the DL for and what date can last year's draft picks be dealt?

I believe it's a year after they're drafted or a year after they sign.
