Since we are talking about things that will never happen, there was something I was thinking about the other day. I love that Theo got Soler, but I wonder if 30 mil for him is the most effecient way of revamping the system. With that 30 mil could the cubs have instead said Boston "we will give you Dempster paid off for Bogaerts, Owens, and Lackey half paid off?"

With Middlebrooks holding down 3B and the sox being up against the luxury tax, and wonder if they would do it. It might give them enough flexibility to sign Hamels or a big SP next year.

This would cost about 27 mil and I think Bogaerts is a better prospect than Soler, not to mention that the cubs would get a decent reclamation project in Lackey.

The same thing would work with Rendon and 40 mil of Werth (assuming Werth is worth at least 10 mil over the life of the contract).

Cecil pitched today for Toronto. Aaron Laffey may be put in the rotation as well. Romero and Alvarez is all they've got standing. Adding Guthrie is a bandaid move for them, but they've got to make a move for something. He makes sense as a guy who's had success in the AL East on some level and if they fall out of it, they wouldn't be giving up much.

Olney says Dempster maybe traded in the next 10-to-14 days to either Red Sox/Dodgers.

Olney really going out on a limb here. At least he said maybe.

With the payroll we shed this year and will shed in the upcoming offseason if we don't spend much, then we should have plenty of money to do both if we and they are so inclined. We're only paying Soler about $3 million per year and projections have us well below our budget max for 2013 - possibly $30-50 million below - so paying Soler and taking part of the contract of a guy like Lackey for a really good return should not be a problem, especially if we don't intend to spend money this coming offseason.

I think a lot of the extra money will be going to renovate Wrigley. I think the Ricketts are diverting (not the right word) money to upgrade the facilities. I don't have a problem with investing in Wrigley, but it may mean they operate with a significantly smaller budget for a few years.

I love that the Ricketts seem to be long term investors, it's just painful to watch, but that what happens when a franchise has neglected important parts for 20 years.

Can anyone cite some examples of trades in baseball where great prospects get thrown into a deal because the receiving team is willing to take on a lousy contract?

I can't think of any.

I really don't see this going on much longer. I really think this could get done today even, because every start he makes for us going forward is added risk. Injury, poor performance, possible teams looking at him deciding they need something else, other pitchers hitting the market......Whatever we get, I'm sure pitching is the focus, but I can't help but think other teams are looking at his numbers and seeing that he's surely going to have a dropoff from this point forward. maybe even a sizable one.

I think it's going to go on a bit longer. Unless Dempster is going to the Red Sox or something, the meticulous nature of the new regime means it's going to take some time for them to decide what package they like. As fans, we look at the other team's top prospects, pick out the guys who are at positions we need and don't seem like too much to ask for, and call it a trade.

I'm imagining the new front office treating this trade deadline like a second draft. Weeks of scouting, video breakdowns, discussion, and asking anyone and everyone who knows these kids about their character and work ethic.

While I agree that's how I suspect they operate, my hope is it's been going on for a while already, when it comes to teams with interest in Dempster. If there's more than one team with an offer on the table right now, I don't want anything to screw it up. The longer this goes on, I just think the less we wind up with.

The Cubs took a scout off his normal routine to see garrett Gould's start at Rancho last week, according to some dude on Twitter. Could have been looking at McGough and Eadington as well, as far as pen arms go. Might have been there for Lee's start as well.

Pretty sure it happened when the Dodgers traded Carlos Santana for Casey Blake, although I don't think Santana was a super well established prospect at the time, but he was in the midst of a breakout season in high A.

Yeah, if this FO is as sharp as everyone has made it out to be, they should have a good idea of whatever return they want to get from Dempster, Garza, and Soriano. It's been obvious since early May that Garza and Dempster are available. Soriano took a little longer to raise his value.

So, Dempster just got put on the DL with right lat tightness.

I'm not sure that I believe that he's really hurt. Is it possible this is more just keeping him safe until the trade goes through? Seems odd that he's completely fine after his start and hanging out with his friends now he's incapable of pitching.

I was thinking something along these lines. Sure seems to sound like it.

Cubs starter Ryan Dempster is going to the 15-day disabled list with right lat muscle tightness, the Cubs announced Monday.

Dempster has been pitching through the soreness, with 22 consecutive scoreless innings over his last three starts. It's his second DL stint of the season, after he missed two starts in April with a quad injury.

The Cubs are calling it a precautoinary move and said the injury is not serious. Dempster is expected to be dealt before the July 31 trade deadline.

Even if this is purely precautionary,.the problem is that his recent great starts are devalued because he will have to come back and prove that he is healthy. Then if he has a couple poor starts, his value is shot. This is horrible timing.
