Pretty sure Dempster or his agent would file a grievance with the league if we were to banish him to the bullpen or run him into the ground, etc. Moreover, I can't imagine that be would a productive strategy as it concerns attracting and signing free agents.

He couldn't file any grievances if they broke his fingers.

Its hard to pick up your teeth with broken fingers

Not that I think this is an option for Dempster, but thinking more about the qualifying offer, I'm wondering if it opens things up to s sign and trade type situation? I'll use Napoli as an example here. Texas gives him the tender, doesn't really want to keep him, but figures someone will sign him. No one does, so he signs the tender(unsure when or if there's a deadline to sign it). I wonder if the player is immediately tradeable then? A team could then trade for him conceivably(if the tender acts as an option that was picked up) and give up whatever for the player, without losing their 1st rounder or draft budget and also negotiate the extension, in the process. I think this could be a possible loophole to still get guys trapped under the tender a longterm deal and also compensate the team losing the player as well.

Really, really disappointing outcome. I hope Dempster gets shelled every start for the rest of the year, especially if he's still on the Cubs.

My [expletive] brother just called me to ask how possible/awesome it would be for the Cubs to get Josh Johnson in exchange for Ryan Dempster.

I cursed at him a lot and hung up.

Not a huge surprise, but good to know. RT @TBrownYahoo: The Cubs have told Dempster suitors they'd grant a window to negotiate extension.

I still say this'll turn out OK. Heed my words.

It's not often that we're on the same page, so I'll savor the moment. This being said, it will be more amusing for us to get an equal or better return after people have made themselves look silly with their respective plots to avenge his treachery

I’ve been wondering whether I should get into this thread. My hatred of Dumpster is already off-scale, so I simply have nothing new to say… even if I extend my range. But I will stay long enough to say that I hope some of the former teat sucklers are finally getting a taste of the sour milk and realize that they haven’t been clamped down on Salma Hayek but on a more hirsute version of Rosie O’Donnell. The Horror!

Still, some will continue to suckle from those turgid mammaries as if their very life essence depends on it. The Dumpster chuckles, knowing their weakness and dependence, and knowing his job, his mission, is to not only prolong that dependence but to prolong their eternal agony. Failure never tasted so sweet.

Thank goodness then, when questioned about all the trade rumors swirling about him, Dumpster, on July 20th, after a losing start against St. Louis, said he had had no problem focusing despite the talk, and that he just needed “TO DO HIS JOB”. On July 25th, after a loss against Pittsburgh, he again reiterated all he was focused on was “DOING HIS JOB”. So as the trade winds have blown over the past week: 2 starts, 2 losses, and an ERA of 5+. Just imagine where we would be without him. Oh, wait, looks like we won’t have to worry about that!

i still think we get delgado. i think dempster cares too much about his good guy image to let this blow up. he'll cave, probably in the next couple days. there is a whoollleeeee lot of posturing going on right now

wren says they're "moving on" but then leaves the door open for the trade to still be done. then he puts the pressure on dempster by letting everyone know exactly how this is playing out.

dempster is trying to gain sympathy so he can save face and still look like a good guy about this. behind closed doors, i think he's still holding out for LA while knowing in the back of his mind that he'll accept a trade to atlanta if LA is truly out.

cubs FO is leaking things so we hear things from twitter dudes about how they might just keep him and qualify him. this is about the only leverage they can use with LA and with dempster.

basically everyone is playing chicken right now. my main concern would be that atlanta gets impatient and makes a deal for another pitcher (dempster is probably hoping for this too). as long as atlana hasn't made another deal, i feel like this is still going to happen

Pretty much my thinking, too; until the deadline passes or Atlanta makes another pitching trade, I'm expecting this to get done.

the first two paragraphs were great, but the third left something to be desired

I made the mistake of taking a sip of water before reading gville's post. And now, I must clean my laptop.
