I'm skeptical. If the Dodgers were really offering Webster for Demp, Theo would have taken it by now. He's not on par with Delgado value-wise, but it's still overpaying for Dempster considering the Cubs have zero leverage.

Are you sure? Because Theo doesn't seem the type to pull the trigger unless he's getting everything he wants or he has no choice. If he can wait, he'll wait.

if it's a multi-team deal, it must be the blue jays

While it sucks to come crashing down from Delgado, any of these returns are fair. Take one, hope Garza makes his next start and sell Atlanta or whomever on him to still get that top level prospect.

Marlin just backed up a CubsDen report that the Dodgers are offering one of Reed or Webster, straight up for Dempster, or Gould plus an extra piece or two.

Damn. Wish they'd do Webster and Gould.

Hell, if we can't get what we want for Dempster or Garza and nobody wants Soriano, why don't we just keep everybody and make a blockbuster deal for Justin Upton centered around Jackson and Vitters and make a semi-decent run at contending next year. We've been playing pretty good baseball since Rizzo came up and with the same starting rotation plus Upton to help the offense we might surprise a few people. If we're struggling next July, we can still trade Dempster, Garza, et al. for prospects.

Would saying that Reed is essentially Lefty Cashner as a prospect be a totally outrageous thing to say?

A major league source confirmed to me that the Cubs were operating under the premise that Dempster strongly preferred Los Angeles but would consider a deal with the Atlanta Braves. After weighing offers from both teams, Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer went with the Atlanta deal which was superior to what Ned Colletti and the Dodgers were offering.

However, Dempster was not ready to write off a trade to LA and told the Cubs he was not ready to approve any deal other than with the Dodgers. The Braves, wanting a resolution quickly so that they had time to evaluate other options, then pulled the plug on the trade when Dempster was unwilling to make a decision according to their timetable.

Epstein reportedly was livid when the deal with the Braves fell through and it appears for good reason as a handful of scouts that I spoke with in other organizations felt that the Cubs had made a tremendous deal getting Randall Delgado for essentially a two-to-three month rental.

Nah, it's pretty accurate.

Sounds about right.

I would love to be in the FO and see what's going on with all this being how hectic it is. I'm sure there's a ton of obscenities being tossed around with the majority towards Dempster since he royally pissed off his bosses. Give's them the OK to Atlanta to get a huge return and then veto's it. Hoyerstein can't be happy one bit.

I can't imagine Theo is the type of guy you'd want to piss off. I really have no basis for this but he seem like the type of guy you don't want to cross.

What's he going to do? It's not like he's Michael Corleone.

They're basically daring him to take a qualifying offer if they don't get their price. I'd say this is accurate.

Jackson and Vitters as the big pieces for JUpton? Who do we get to drug the Arizona GM first?

Also from that blog post...

While the fan base is hopeful of major free agent signings next winter to accelerate the major league club’s turnaround, a former GM confirmed to me that is not the game plan he hears Epstein and Co. have drawn up.

“The Cubs are a long way from contending and they will not be active in high-profile free agents for at least another year if not two. Theo has carte blanche from Tom Ricketts to spend a lot of money when he feels it is warranted but until he believes that the major league team is ready to take a big step up and contend, he is going to stick to his long term plan.

"I’d look for a few more David DeJesus-type signings in the next off season. Fans who are expecting big names and big money deals will be disappointed, but I agree with what they are doing. That system was so badly broken and the organization so poorly constructed for a very long time that a complete tear down is the only way they can fix all of the problems,” he told me.

so theo hatched a lousy plan and told all the other teams what it was. seems reasonable.

I like how Kaplan points out that Gerardo Concepcion helps us turnaround our near the bottom ranked farm system.

Yea, he's not paying attention.
