The Dodgers and Cubs, stalled on what the Dodgers would give up in a trade for Ryan Dempster, have had some discussions on expanding the deal to also include Alfonso Soriano or Bryan LaHair, sources say.

The inclusion of Soriano or LaHair is still viewed as a longshot, perhaps even a "massive longshot," as one person briefed on the discussions described it.

But the Cubs are desperate to rid themselves of Soriano, and they found little or no interest from other teams, even when they offered to pay almost all of the remaining $48 million on Soriano's contract.

The Cubs are also trying hard to find a way to construct a Dempster deal with the Dodgers, who may be the only team that the right-hander would agree to go to. A proposed deal with the Braves hit a roadblock when Dempster wouldn't say yes, and talks with the Dodgers have been difficult because the Cubs feel that the Dodgers won't part with prospects who have any value.

Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports that the Dodgers "still want to add a bat" and have some interest in Justin Morneau.

Take Dempster and Soriano/LaHair and give us something reasonable damnit!

And as soon as I post that, Roto post this

Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports that that Dodgers and Cubs have had discussions about including Alfonso Soriano or Bryan LaHair in a potential Ryan Dempster deal.

It's unlikely to happen, though, with Knobler being told by one person briefed on the discussions that the inclusion of either hitter would be a "massive longshot." The Cubs are desperate to send Dempster to the Dodgers, as they might be the only team he's approved a trade to, but it doesn't appear that the Dodgers are willing to budge on what they'll give up.

We've reached the point on Dempster LAD-CHC talks where both sides know what the other wants to do. Now we'll see if something changes.

Cubs will buckle. At the end of the day, they'll have to be practical and accept that Dempster is of virtually no value to them, so even a small return is a net win.

Bringing him back next year is an option. I doubt we buckle.

A small return is not a net win.

Dempster at 12.5M for 2013 is worth far more than a "small return"

How does the new CBA work if a team signs multiple free agents? If a team like the Dodgers ends up signing a few free agents, how does signing Dempster affect their draft?

Unless they intend on drastically changing their apparent intentions for 2013 (which would be awesome), not really.

I'd agree if the Cubs had too many arms competing for five spots or if they had budget limiations, but neither apply in this case. I don't know how holding on to Dempster is any different than signing another Maholm next offseason.

There is no upside and taking crap from the Dodgers(Whatever the 2013 strategy may be). This isn't the Hendry regime. We have no interest in a Blake Dewitt.

Yeah Kyle has lost his mind apparently

I guess we'll see. I predict Dempster is a Dodger by the deadline, and the Cubs don't get back anyone with better than a marginal case to be in our top-15 prospects.

There's no real upside to taking garbage back from the Dodgers. Unless you get a return of a prospect or prospects with actual upside, you hold onto him. Someone is going to have to fill the rotation next year, ant it's not as if there is anyone in the system that would fit the bill. Not anyone that has a future with the big league club.

Exactly: Dempster next year would be an innings-eater, marking the time until Epstein and Co. feel like trying to win. You can always go get another one or three of those, mineaswell get a small return for him now.

Notice I didn't say 'garbage', I said small return. I'm guessing one or two live arms with some upside. Better than Cates, not as good as Gould.

Yeah, I'd rather see them keep Dempster than give him to a team for less than he's worth. It's the one bit of leverage Theo owns on this. He can elect to make a bad deal or not make a deal at all. I prefer "not make a deal".

Even though it's different execs involved, I still have a bitter taste in the fact that Maddux was traded for Cesar [expletive] Izturis. Don't think I could forgive another trade that nets the Cubs less than equal value with the Dodgers

There comes a point where the return becomes so meager that keeping Dempster is worth more to the team. The question is whether the Dodgers offer is at or below that point.

I predict you're hilariously wrong unless we get somebody back who has lost prospect status.

The rest of the CBA for signing FA probably doesn't change. If the Dodgers signed 2 guys, they'd forfeit their 1st AND 2nd rounders. Which actually puts a guy like Dempster back into play possibly as far as netting us a pick. If a team is willing to punt their 1st rounder, I'd say it'd be much easier to go ahead and punt their 2nd as well. I guess it's possible a couple of teams could do that. At any rate, that's definitely the best chance of Dempster actually netting us a pick. No idea how many FA a team is willing to sign like that now. I think the old rule only allowed you to sign 3 type A's, so I guess it'd probably stay the same.

Dempster will only require a one year commitment.

I think the Cubs will keep him around for another year and attempt to trade him again in 2013. I don't know why everyone assumes he's just going to use his 10/5 next year again in any potential trades. Dempster used his 10/5 under a unique circumstance in which he thought a team with his BFF were one of the front runners for his services. That unique circumstance probably won't duplicate itself next year. If Dempster ends up stuck on the Cubs, he'll badly regret that things worked out this way and he won't want to repeat this situation again.
