Would saying that Reed is essentially Lefty Cashner as a prospect be a totally outrageous thing to say?

Nah, it's pretty accurate.

Cashner was a better prospect with a higher ceiling, imo.

I like how Kaplan points out that Gerardo Concepcion helps us turnaround our near the bottom ranked farm system.

Yea, he's not paying attention.

He does know that Baez has had a hard time adjusting to pro ball though.

So is this going down tonight sometime or is Dempster gonna think about it for another week, gather his thoughts while he takes his plane ride today or whatever the hell he told the Tribune?

Dodgers have not done moves corresponding to a deal which would likely proceed a Dempster deal. Some shufflings, but not adequately so.

Also from that blog post...

While the fan base is hopeful of major free agent signings next winter to accelerate the major league club’s turnaround, a former GM confirmed to me that is not the game plan he hears Epstein and Co. have drawn up.

“The Cubs are a long way from contending and they will not be active in high-profile free agents for at least another year if not two. Theo has carte blanche from Tom Ricketts to spend a lot of money when he feels it is warranted but until he believes that the major league team is ready to take a big step up and contend, he is going to stick to his long term plan.

"I’d look for a few more David DeJesus-type signings in the next off season. Fans who are expecting big names and big money deals will be disappointed, but I agree with what they are doing. That system was so badly broken and the organization so poorly constructed for a very long time that a complete tear down is the only way they can fix all of the problems,” he told me.

Not surprising; though disappointing. If they didn't spend last off-season, I'm not sure what has changed to make them spend this off-season.

Heyman:

The Cubs offered to send Ryan Dempster to his preferred Dodgers straight up for solid right-handed pitching prospect Allen Webster, but the Dodgers have rejected the offer.

The issue seems to be this: the Dodgers don't love Dempster as much as he loves them.

According to people briefed on the talks, the Dodgers have thus far offered a couple of lesser prospects, guys who may project as relievers.

The Dodgers, it seems, are much more interested in a different Cubs pitcher, Matt Garza.

It's possible the Dodgers are playing hardball because they're holding the cards. But word is, they do indeed prefer Garza.

The Braves, meanwhile, are disappointed but say they have moved on after originally believing Dempster would approve a trade to Atlanta before Dempster did an about face and rejected the trade. Dempster is said to have at first told Braves players he would go, and apparently all the folks making the trade understood that as well.

The Braves, who were originally committed to trading top prospect Randall Delgado to Chicago for Dempster, are now telling people that there's a value to having players who want to play for them and suggesting that there's little likelihood they'd take Dempster even if he came crawling back. They are now trying to trade for Zack Greinke.

So in other words, Dempster completely screwed our negotiating leverage and the Dodgers know it.

*chants "Cashner for Rizzo* to feel better*

Yea, we're pretty much effed on getting anything even resembling Delgado at this point.

So the best the Cubs can get from the Dodgers is their AA reliever with the shredded shoulder, or some other equivalent of damaged goods?

This is impossible. Castro's Spray Chart assured me that we were going to get a package the equal of, if not better, than Delgado, and then he was going to come and laugh at us for doubting his genius insight.

Again, if it came down to it I'm not sure how the draft pick or another year of Dempster for 12.5 MM would be the worst thing in the world.

After this stunt, I think he's worn out his welcome in Chicago....

Oh my. This is one of the most frustrating things I've ever read. I hope it is not all true.
