The Dodgers are looking to "add a position player" as well as a SP, according to the LA Times this morning. I'd give them Demp and Barney for Webster if they were willing.

the scuttle was looking at pence or victorino for left field, with abreau heading to bench/pinch hitting spot starts.

We have a left fielder OPSng in the .800s who just so happens to be one of the top defensive LFs in the league. Apparently.

1 exec wondered if discrepancy in return was so great between what #Braves #Dodgers would give #Cubs for Dempster, would Chi say, (cont)

kick in $1M extra to convince Demspter to go to Atl, viewing someone like Randall Delgado as worth several million for next few yrs in value

Can we do this? Bribe Dempster to approve the trade?

I am sure the Cubs could donate a million to his charity if that would persuade him.

But he would be making $2-$3 million over the next year and a half (after we pick up 90%), so he obviously making too much money.

Really love that having Dempster on a 1 year deal is a "trap door". Hey Ken, if that is a legitimate possibility, then it's pause for Dempster to reconsider things, not the Cubs.

Might it actually be a positive if the Dodgers work another trade and then shut the door completely?

Then at least Dempster would know that LA isn't going to happen.

Depends if you want Demp back for 12M/1yr. Personally, I do not. The risk of dangling an offer to quailify for draft-pick compensation to too risky in my mind...Demp could accept and then we'd have a 36YO SP and we'll be back here again next July.

Like was mentioned, write a nice check to the Demp Fondation as a mind-changer.

Let's kill two birds with one stone and have the Dodgers trade for Greinke, leaving the Braves with no one left to turn to but us.

Fixed that for you!

Or Theo could just tell him, "LA isn't going to happen - they're not serious about this. It's Atlanta or stay here, your choice."

The Cubs are neither hindered by rotation space or money to spend, having the ability to keep Dempster around to deal him next year, or to use that threat to encourage a trade now, is definitely a good thing.

Why would the Cubs want to go through this whole trade deadline thing with Dempster again next year? Why would it be any different than this year?

Because it's a way to gain value from Dempster and his situation? It shouldn't be the goal, but it's far from an undesirable outcome.

A lot can change in a year. Dodgers might fill pitching needs in the offseason (or trading deadline), and won't be an option for Dempster next year.

Source: #Dodgers, #Cubs “might” be getting closer on Dempster. Teams remain in dialogue.

Maybe one of the most pointless tweets I've ever seen.

Marlin just backed up a CubsDen report that the Dodgers are offering one of Reed or Webster, straight up for Dempster, or Gould plus an extra piece or two.

Damn. Wish they'd do Webster and Gould.

I'm skeptical. If the Dodgers were really offering Webster for Demp, Theo would have taken it by now. He's not on par with Delgado value-wise, but it's still overpaying for Dempster considering the Cubs have zero leverage.
