The Cubs won't get in trouble for this. I bet there's a verbal agreement between Soler's agent and the Cubs but nothing signed right now, so nothing to get them in trouble. This front office has been around a while, they know to cover their asses.

There will be an investigation, OFAC and Epstein will be unable to agree on appropriate punishment, and it will be turned over to the commissioner's office, never to be heard from again.

Knowing the Cubs luck, your scenario happens and Soler is sent to the Red Sox as compensation for Theo.

If something bad happens here, I'll either blame Crane Kenney, Jim Hendry, Sammy Sosa, Bob Howry, Rafael Furcal, the dude for the Mets that hit the homer in 04, Joe Buck, Joe Morgan, Ryan Theriot, Jeromy Burnitz, John Cusack, Jim Belushi, Bernie Mac, Jeff Gordon, Peter Gammons, Nick Cafardo, Jacque Jones, Gary Scott, Wavin' Wendell, Michael Barrett, Rajon Rondo, or the Ultimate Warrior.

I thought it was decided long ago that everything was CT's fault.

I was [expletive] there for that [expletive] homer. Ugh. Thanks a lot guys.

Trey, some heroin plz.

Don't stick it in your head, it hurts.

Not for long. Forehead injection bypasses the blood/brain barrier.

I don't often do heroin, but when I do I inject it straight through the forehead.

Jorge Angure tweeted if Cubs and Soler have a deal in place, they have to act like they don't, because it's illegal, until he's unbllocked.

Yikes, they could be in some trouble. This entire Cuban defection process seems ridiculously complicated to me. Who knew the US had an office of foreign assets control? WTF do they do and for what purpose? Also, why does any team/IFA need to wait to agree to a deal?

As a banker, I deal with OFAC quite often. Every time I pull a credit report, it checks that applicants name against a list of known foreign criminals. We have a fairly high hispanic population, so we get a lot of OFAC hits on what amounts to generic names. . . .Jose Sanchez, for example could set off an OFAC hit. Then we just have to jump through a couple of hoops to verify that Jose is not a drug cartel leader.

Basically OFAC tries to make sure that no one in the US does business with the wrong people.

I guess Theo called in a favour to get Bud off his back.

Rotoworld's thoughts:

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports that Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos and members of his front office watched Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler work out Wednesday morning in the Dominican Republic.

There were rumors earlier this week that the Cubs had an agreement in place with Soler, but it's clear that other teams are still very much alive in the process. The Yankees, Red Sox, White Sox and Phillies have also expressed interest in the 19-year-old outfielder while the Orioles are scheduled to visit Sunday. Soler has applied for residency in the Dominican Republic, an important hurdle before he can be granted free agency by MLB.

If we don't get Soler, I will get pretty pissed for the first time since the whole Theo-Gate situation commenced.

+1

With the direction they took this offseason he was pretty much the must sign FA this year for the Cubs...

The Star Ledger reported that the Cubs came to an agreement with him if that means anything (I don't think it does).

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Marlins have serious interest in Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler.

The Fish missed out on Yoenis Cespedes earlier this week and will now apparently direct their focus toward the younger but less-hyped Soler. The 19-year-old worked out for the Blue Jays on Wednesday morning in the Dominican Republic and is scheduled to meet with the Orioles on Sunday. The Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, White Sox and Phillies have also expressed interest. Soler is waiting to be granted free agency by Major League Baseball, and must first establish residency in the Dominican. That could take a few weeks.

I want to kick the Marlins in the dick

The Marlins's goal this offseason was to appear in a headline at least once a week to remind everybody they are now the Miami Marlins. They accomplished that.

And I still keep forgetting they're the Miami Marlins now.

lol

Marlins president David Samson said Wednesday night that the Marlins do not have interest in Jorge Soler.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported Wednesday afternoon that the Marlins were among the teams planning to bid on the 19-year-old Cuban defector, but that is apparently not the case. The Fish missed out on Yoenis Cespedes earlier this week, watching him sign a four-year, $36 million contract with the A's after offering him $36 million over six years. But they're not going to rush back into the international free agent market.

I could see them paying big for a cuban star to sell to the public immediately. But I doubt they have the patience or foresight to risk big money on a prospect who will be years away from producing and may wind up being traded anyway (thus losing his appeal as a Cuban to sell to the public).

I don't like the way the Marlins built their team this offseason. Maybe it will work but it's not the way I would have done it. Of course their main goal was/is to make a splash and bring lots of attention to the team so that fans will show, but the moves are not necessarily baseball smart. The Hanley/Reyes situation was handled poorly, and I'm never a big fan of a team that tries to piece their rotation together with veteran pickups like Buehrle and Zambrano. And I definitely hate big money closers. So a lot of people say Soler is possibly the better player of the 2, but they go hard after Cespedes to garner attention but when he signs elsewhere they have no interest in a potential 5 tool player. Just kind of proves that they aren't really willing to spend extravagantly, but they are willing to pretend that they are trying to. If they have $30+ million to throw at Cespedes, to me 25+ million at Soler is a smart backup plan.

anyways, [expletive] the marlins
