Jorge Angure tweeted if Cubs and Soler have a deal in place, they have to act like they don't, because it's illegal, until he's unbllocked.

How's the heroin stash looking Treebeard?

I never thought I'd ever ask this question, but considering their recent salary dumping efforts and attempts to not go over the luxury tax limit... do the Yankees have enough money in their budget to afford Soler?

also, i was pretty lukewarm on the deal initially, but i've come around on the idea that this would be a very good thing for the cubs (just not the massively good thing i thought we'd have a chance to get). let's hope this is all just us pretending to not have a deal to stay out of trouble.

Yikes, they could be in some trouble. This entire Cuban defection process seems ridiculously complicated to me. Who knew the US had an office of foreign assets control? WTF do they do and for what purpose? Also, why does any team/IFA need to wait to agree to a deal?

Any team that enters into agreement with a Cuban player who still needs to be unblocked would be potentially subject to an OFAC fine and, in theory, disciplinary action from MLB. The league has its own department of investigations, but whether it will look into the reported deal remains to be seen.

I think we all know who's responsible for this.

You did. Someone posted it, because that's what was/is on Wikipedia. I'm just hoping now we can cover up whatever we've done with Soler. If we've got a deal in place an investigation could get messy for all parties involved.

No, they don't. According to everything I have read, the Yankees are trying to get under the luxury tax ceiling. I can't imagine them paying Soler significant money to sit in their Minor League system.

If something bad happens here, I'll either blame Crane Kenney, Jim Hendry, Sammy Sosa, Bob Howry, Rafael Furcal, the dude for the Mets that hit the homer in 04, Joe Buck, Joe Morgan, Ryan Theriot, Jeromy Burnitz, John Cusack, Jim Belushi, Bernie Mac, Jeff Gordon, Peter Gammons, Nick Cafardo, Jacque Jones, Gary Scott, Wavin' Wendell, Michael Barrett, Rajon Rondo, or the Ultimate Warrior.

Kenney is who I was getting at. Glad somebody gets it.

I thought it was decided long ago that everything was CT's fault.

it's a joke if the cubs get in much trouble for this. players and draftees agree to pre-draft deals all the time. i suppose the difference is that those aren't widely reported.

Those aren't deals with players originating from OFAC-sanctioned countries. My guess it it's nothing more than a small fine if anything. It'd help if Soler was established as a citizen outside of Cuba prior to last night, but a wink-nod agreement is a bit tough to prove, and it certainly isn't worth the Treasury Dept's time considering who it involves.
