I really hope this is front-loaded. Soler will almost certainly be in a Samardzija '12 situation where his contract expires prior to being arb-eligibile. That being the case, his salary his first year after the contract expires (be it '15 or '16) will be set by the Cubs with the caveat that it can't be less than 80% the previous year's salary or 70% his salary the year prior.

So assuming it's 4/27.5 you do something like 13/9/2.9/2.6

Now obviously, his agent isn't an idiot, so he'll understand why the contract is being structured in such a way, but hopefully this is part of the reason he's getting as much as he is in AAV

If it's not something that extreme it's a pretty crazy deal.

So he'd be, what, 23 when he's arb eligible then? At this point, he's essentially like getting a top 10 draft pick, the difference being that by the time he's big league ready he'll have, what, 2 years left under team control? However, if he really does look to be a superstar by the time that rolls around, we could just try and lock him up for another 8-10 years.

The problem with Samardzija is that he is at that point and just now starting to show signs of life so it's a tough as for what to do with him at this point. Had 2011 not gone as well as it did for him, there's a decent chance that he'd have been gone by now.

Brett Taylor @BleacherNation

Heyman either ahead of, or way behind, this story. RT @JonHeymanCBS cubs, many mystery teams (marlins?) in mix for 5-tool phenom jorge soler

Jesus christ, how exciting is the farm system going to be this year? can we send castro to AAA so I can just forget the big league team exists for a year?

Considering that our system was middle of the pack entering the offseason, with the additions of Soler, Rizzo, Concpcion, and Torryes, we'd have to be at least closing in on top 10 by now, right?
you don't even bother reading any threads you post in anymore do you?

He wouldn't have time to make 50 posts per day if he let little things like reading threads get in his way.

Don't worry, you'll be back to that level as soon as the season starts and you become enraged over every play that doesn't go the Cubs way.

Are you talking to yourself? I thought that was your shtick

pardon my ignorance, but say it's a 4 year major league deal. he doesn't become a free agent after those four years, does he?

Unless there is a clause in the contract that says he will (like the one Cespedes and Fukudome got) than no. It will be like what is happening to Samardzija now. If he doesn't have enough service time for arbitration (which seems likely), then the Cubs will be able to cut his last years salary by the full 20% if they want to, or they can choose to non-tender him at that point. Unless there is that clause though, he'd be under Cubs control for the 6 years of major league service time just like every prospect.

Still don't get it 100%. Is the basic jist that no matter what, he's under our control for 6 years after his big league debut no matter what? I guess my main confusion about these types of deals is what they mean by major league deal if he'll be in the minors and not even on the 40 man. Does it just mean that he'll be getting paid more as opposed to standard minor league salary?

Have you guys heard of that Cuban Jorge Soler? I think the Cubs should go after him....what do you think?

is it pronounced like George or like whore-hay

Hey guys who do you think this guys upside is similar to? Maybe someone like Justin Upton?

No one wants to answer these comp questions it seems.

I think Justin Upton is a bad word or something.

Am I missing something (I'll admit my sarcasm meter isn't as good as it once was) or did you miss something? This was already covered.

You didn't miss a thing, I don't think. In fact, now I feel like I missed something. This got covered? Adonde? I want to see some of the comparisons this guy is getting so I can dream comparison dreams.
