Overabundance? RT @SplittinAdam: @Kevin_Goldstein Are #Cubs seriously interested in Cespedes with our overabundance of outfielders?

lol

Kevin Goldstein @Kevin_Goldstein

So they NEED OFers. RT @SplittinAdam: @Kevin_Goldstein They have DeJesus, Johnson, Jackson, Sappelt, Campana and more

I love Kevin Goldstein. If I were a twitterer, I would happily follow him.

When I'm looking for big-league solutions, the first place I go is A-ball, aka the Cuban league.

Pass.

Worked out for the teams that signed Chapman, Contreras, Kendrys Morales and Alexi Ramirez.

Edit: I'll readily admit I don't know enough about the Cuban league to have a long intellectual discussion about the quality of the league. I just remember several players coming from there to the bigs and having success their first year. Most of them, especially Alexi, I heard tons of discussion about how bad the quality of the Cuban league was and the doubts that he would adjust quickly at all. I remember people being shocked that Alexi was going to start the season in the bigs.

Stupid good points ruining my Cespedes dislike.

This is an aside and I apologize for going off topic a bit, and I'm not trying to troll or anything, asking an honest question. While many consider Cuban and Japanese leagues to be minor league caliber, why do they always seem to be the toughest teams to beat in world competitions? Do they have better star level talent to comprise into one team than USA, Dominican, etc.? Or is it because lack of scouting these teams have on them compared to a world of scouting knowledge freely available on the star players from MLB that comprise the teams for USA, Dominican, Venezuela, etc.?

Clay Davenport did a killer write-up on Cespedes

http://claydavenport.com/?p=97

the whole thing is a must-read, but some highlights:

There is a major league player who is, statistically, quite comparable to Cespedes. He is also a center fielder, has a Gold Glove, and is only about 2.5 months older.

...

The hype of what we expect from Adam Jones and the reality we’ve gotten seems to me like a very good lesson for Yoennis Cespedes.

(Aside: you really, really should click on (Jose) Abreu’s link and look at his numbers. If I were an MLB exec I’d be tempted to hire an extraction team to go in and kidnap the guy so he could play for me).

Cespedes: (age 25): .333/.424/.667, 33 HR in 354 AB

Jose Abreu (age 24): .453/.597/.986, 33 HR in 212 AB

Sweet Jesus. Get It done, Theo and Jed. Were those numbers put up in the same league that Cespedes plays in? Why hasn't there been any talk of this guy during the offseason?

it's because they have good pitchers and the one game playoff system is a joke.

There's the new market ineffifiency Theo's been trying to find: Kidnap bigtime players from Cuba before they're ready to defect.

Probably because you can't just go into Cuba and sign anyone you want.

Marlins president David Samson said Thursday that he's planning an aggressive run at Yoenis Cespedes.

"Aggressive right to the point of stupidity, but not quite there," Samson told 790 The Ticket. "We think he’s a perfect fit for us, but it has to be sane. [We've been] expressing interest, going to visit, making it very clear to his representatives and to him and his family that we think he should not be anywhere other than Miami." The Yankees, Phillies, Tigers, Cubs, White Sox, Cubs, Nationals and Phillies are also said to be seriously interested in the 26-year-old Cuban outfielder.

Per rotoworld. UGH I hate the Marlins.

I know that. I meant more, why has this guy at least not been mentioned as a footnote in some of the Cespedes articles or why you at least don't hear about him being the next big thing out of Cuba when he defects. People talked about Darvish and Chapman a few years before they got to MLB, I am just surprised I haven't seen anything about him mentioned at least as a potential impact FA signing when/if he decides to come to MLB.

Reading this part of that article kind of makes it seem like there may be a lot of PED use in the Cuban league...

Having the full stats in hand allows us to look at the trend in total HR hit over the last few years in Cuba: how they’ve gone from 669 in 2007, to 1192, then 1292, 1498, and finally 1449 in 2011, all with roughly the same number of games and plate appearances. From 2001 to 2007, no hitter in Cuba had more than 28 home runs; its happened nine times in the last four years.

The Marlins were always going to be the biggest obstacle to landing Cespedes, imo. Even before all the madness at the winter meetings.

It makes too much sense for them, trying to draw fans in that market.

Haven't looked through all 19 pages of this thread, but has anyone mentioned concern about steroids?

I'm not sure how the testing is in Cuba, but I would highly doubt its as stringent. And considering how many Dominican players in recent memory have been linked to steroids, I would be very concerned about a Cuban player who has so much to gain by putting up big stats.

I think if there is no reliable testing in place, then you just have to assume someone putting up big numbers is juicing. Just like MLB in 2003. And it would clearly affect his value. Bigtime.
