Haven't looked through all 19 pages of this thread, but has anyone mentioned concern about steroids?

I'm not sure how the testing is in Cuba, but I would highly doubt its as stringent. And considering how many Dominican players in recent memory have been linked to steroids, I would be very concerned about a Cuban player who has so much to gain by putting up big stats.

It's been mentioned. But there isn't much information to go on.

I think if there is no reliable testing in place, then you just have to assume someone putting up big numbers is juicing. Just like MLB in 2003. And it would clearly affect his value. Bigtime.

I suggested it 10 pages ago and was basically ignored. I wasn't sure if that's because people didn't know what to say, or they thought I was stupid. Maybe everyone just has me on ignore? My interest is diminished in him after seeing the comment about increasing home runs in that league. I agree it diminishes his value.

Yeah, obviously I agree. I guess the Cuban league was also affected by the poor pitching depth, a live baseball, and improved fitness regimen. They also learned how to control the spin of the baseball off the bat like Mark McGwire did.

I have no idea why he decided to play honestly. I don't see how it could help his value, but I think it could hurt it possibly.

It won't hurt his value much nor will it help it. The teams making their decisions on him have scouted him for quite some time and know what he's worth.

RT @JimBowdenESPNxm: Yoenis Cespedes tells media there are six teams pursuing him: Marlins, Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, Indians and Orioles

If that's the case, I'm willing to bet the only real competition the Cubs have is the Marlins.

Don't be so sure. Just because the Cubs are a bigger market than the other listed teams doesn't mean that someone else won't make a higher offer. The last thing we want to do is over flex our financial muscles just because we can and next thing you know we're offering 9/120 when the next best offer is 6/50. I don't think that we'd do that but if the price seems to high perhaps move on to Solar.I do think that if all offers are similar that the White Sox having two somewhat young Cuban stars could be a big factor for him.

When the President of the Marlins comes out publicly and says "Aggressive right to the point of stupidity, but not quite there" , and considering their aggressiveness this offseason so far and their desire to bring in players that appeal to the hispanic community which is largely Cuban to begin with, I wouldn't hesitate to think they're the toughest team to beat in this situation.

The more I think about those league home run totals though the more I think there's more going on in the Cuban league than just pure talent. Same # of games, same # of AB's on average each year, but the home run totals practically double over one season, and more than double in two?

It screams "red flag" to me, personally. Makes me want Cespedes a whole lot less. Would prefer Soler very much at this stage

As far as the cuban numbers go, i dont think there is as much inflation in terms of individual numbers as the cumulative stats suggest. Cespedes remained fairly consistent hitting home runs. It seems like its just more of a hitters league now with less dominating pitchers. And yes that Abreu guy is ediculous but so is despaigne. He tied cespedes for the home run recordand played 20 less games.

Nineteen pages and we can't get the spelling of his first name correct in the thread title?

Strangely enough, when creating the thread I was certain that I would screw up the spelling of his name... so I copied and pasted it directly from the BP article.

Then the jerks realized they were spelling his name wrong and edited their own article, leaving me looking like a moron.

I refuse to edit the title until I receive a full apology from BP. It's a matter of principle now.

Cespedes would be a nice addition, but it would have to be at the right price. He's 26. For me, the priority is signing the two 19 year olds OF Jorge Soler and LHP Geraldo Concepcion. Overpay all you want, but get them.

Cespedes says the Cubs have been the most active with him. Rough translation stolen from PSD:

Cuban slugger said Cespedes Yoenis attracted the attention of at least six major league teams, but none has shown much interest in hiring him as the Chicago Cubs.

"Of all the teams who have come, the one that has interested me has been the Chicago Cubs," Cespedes said Monday at the Quisqueya Stadium, before the playoff game between the Tigers and the Cibao Eagles Licey.

Cespedes, 27, defected from Cuba six months ago, where he was part of the national baseball team. He led the Cuban league home run and there is speculation that it could receive more than $ 50 million once it comes to free agency in baseball.

At least 10 teams have seen more private shows in the Dominican Republic, where he has hosted since he defected in July.

Meanwhile, Céspedes has played four games with the Eagles and just 15 at-bats have connected an infield hit with five strikeouts for a .067 average.

The Cuban clarified that while the Cubs have been more active than others, does not mean he will sign with them.

"I've eaten a few times with them and talked a lot, but that does not mean it is safe for me to come to sign with them. I'm just telling it like it is, they have shown more interest than others," said .

Were in the stadium on Monday Cubs executives, including director of operations in the country, José Serra.

Cespedes said recently that there are six teams interested in his services: the Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, Orioles, Marlins and Indians.

"We have not been offered because I'm still resolving my situation of Dominican residence, but with God before it will be soon," he said.

The Cuban clarified that the bureaucratic process to obtain your residence permit in a country outside the United States and Cuba, one of the requirements for deserters from the Caribbean island, is almost solved.
