Is Solar officially a FA yet? If so, I'm betting that between the Cubs and the Marlins, they'll each end up with 1 of the 2. I'd still love both though.

No, because there's no Cuban baseball player whose last name is Solar, doofus.

I used to call him Soler... then enough people were using Solar that I found myself doing so.

Now, every time I want to type his name I have to stop and consciously think about which one it is, which annoys me to no end.

I also originally thought Soler because it made more sense and then changed to Solar. It will all be moot in about 4 years when we learn that it's something else all together and he's in his early 30's.

How long should the FA process take? I wouldn't think that long given that his agent probably had those papers ready to go. It seemed like Concepcion became a FA in no time at all after establishing residency.

I know were supposed to trust Theo, all the scouts and that, but I really hope we don't sign this guy.

Based on what?

Do you have a bunch of information on Cespedes that nobody else does?

I'm hoping it's not an overreaction to a few winter games.

Huh!?

Brett Taylor @BleacherNation

RT @dSoldevila Cespedes is officially a free agent. Finally received Dominican residency permit. MLB teams asked him to stop playing in DR

He must have misspoke there. There's no way it could go that fast.

EDIT: Apparently not. Did some digging on his twitter:

Brett Taylor @BleacherNation

@dSoldevila Officially a resident AND officially a free agent now?

Dionisio Soldevila @dSoldevila Close

@BleacherNation yep, that's how it goes with cubans. Must become residents of a 3rd country (besides cuba and US) to become free agents

If that's true then holy crap, bidding is now open.

Since he's apparently an FA now, I wonder how long it will be til he signs. I imagine this will move pretty quick with ST quickly approaching.

Bleacher Nation says:

UPDATE: Dominican writer Dionisio Soldevila says Cespedes has been granted free agency, too. I followed up with Soldevila to confirm that he meant free agency in addition to residency, and he said that “[Cespedes'] agent Edgar Mercedes says so.” It’s possible we won’t get some big, formal announcement of free agency, so this may, in fact, be the first report of it. Alternatively, free agency is still a few days away, and there’s merely some confusion about residency and free agency. Either way, the bidding is about to ramp up (if it hasn’t occurred already).

I hope it moves fast, and I hope we end up getting him.

I think he can be a solid player, hopefully we get him for a reasonable cost. Cespedes' arrival, Castro's development, BJax ML debut, and Rizzo's Cubs debut will all give us some good reasons to watch this team even if we aren't winning. Not to mention it will be interesting to see how Stewart, T. Wood, and Volstad all do in their first season with the team.

Plus BJax, Rizzo, Castro and Cespedes could be a really solid young offensive core to build around.

Definitely agree, I am pretty excited about our future as a ball club.

But can they match the accomplishments of Patterson, Choi, Hill and Kelton?

Rotoworld's take on his apparent free agency:

Yoenis Cespedes’ representative, Edgar Mercedes, told Dionisio Soldevila of the Associated Press that the Cuban outfielder is officially a free agent.

We learned earlier in the day Tuesday that Cespedes established residency in the Dominican Republic, but was awaiting approval from MLB to be granted free agency. It's possible that Mercedes is jumping the gun here, but he also said that Cespedes stopped playing the Dominican Winter League playoffs at the urging of MLB teams. Stay tuned for further clarification, but it looks like the bidding is about to get underway. The Marlins and the Cubs can be considered the early front-runners.

With the amount of posting you do here, you aren't aware if Soler is a FA yet?

with the amount of things he isn't aware of, you're going to harp on that?

Or you could, you know, just answer the question or not bother responding. Then again, being civil toward posters you dont particularly care for isn't your thing and who am I to try and change you.

Why should I change? He's the one who sucks.

Looks like they're gonna do whatever it takes to land him

Roto

Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports that the Marlins are prepared to make a "substantial offer" to Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Marlins president David Samson indicated as much during a radio appearance earlier this month by saying that they would be "aggressive right to the point of stupidity, but not quite there." While the dollar figure isn't known, Frisaro hears that the Marlins are prepared to offer a contract between four and six years. Cespedes, 26, is on the brink of free agency after establishing residency in the Dominican Republic. Many believe he'll end up with a contract north of the $30.25 million deal Aroldis Chapman signed with the Reds in January of 2010. The Cubs, Tigers, White Sox, Orioles, Yankees, Nationals, Indians and Phillies are among some of the other interested clubs.

That quote is at least a couple weeks old.

It makes sense for them to go after the guy, but I'm not sure it makes a ton of sense to go crazy. Yes there's a Cuban population down there, but I have my doubts about how well they can monetize that base by signing an expensive Cuban. Plus, Florida has been "in" on everybody this year, but they've still acquired just a manager, a couple Chicago pitching castoffs and Jose Reyes. They've committed some money, but I'm not sure how willing they are to go even higher. They could just be happy with the non-stop press they've received all winter just by being willing to be open about their supposed targets.
