I can assure you, "Ho-say" is not the correct way to pronounce Jose. It's just the way people who grow up speaking English and then learn Spanish (or just try to say the name) say it.

I took 4 years of Spanish in high school and I have no clue what you are talking about with regard to the pronunciation of Jose.

The Spanish you learn in a midwestern Spanish class is going to sound markedly different from the Spanish you'll hear in most Spanish communities.

I don't doubt that, but listening to native Spanish speakers at the link I provided, I would still say that "Ho-say" is the closest English phonetic representation.

If the argument is simply that Spanish pronunciation can't be represented 100% accurately using English phonetics, then I guess I see where you are coming from.

not to prolong this nonsense further but isnt that why jose is typically written with an accent over the e' in order to delineate between the 'ay' or 'eh' sounds? find the accent in yoennis and you will have your proper pronunciation.

the accent mark is about where to put the emphasis, not really the sound itself, if that makes any sense.

this might be an oversimplification (i've never really formally learned grammar outside of a couple years in high school) but there is a set of rules where the emphasis is implied in certain syllables...when the word strays from that basic set of rules, an accent mark is used.

I'm sure Yoennes will get use to whatever way Cubs fans will pronounce his name.

As to the discussion: keep in mind that there are almost as many variants of Spanish pronunciation in the world as there are of English.

Maybe some NSBB poster can simply ask him what the proper way is later this year in Mesa. 8-)

Did anybody see the SNL skit where they were doing a Spanish sports show and then pronounced names like Stan Van Gundy in a Milwaukee accent?

I thought it was kind of funny.

Im not sure if this was discussed earlier or not, but is his first name pronounced like Yo-ehnes or Yo-anes? Im being serious b/c in spanish, the letter "e" is pronounced like we say the letter "a" in english. If its the latter, there will definitely be childish jokes about his name.

Not really true, but people who speak Spanish poorly with bad accents pronounce it that way.

How is that not true? That is the correct pronunciation of the letter "e".

Not to get off on a tangent, but no, it's not.

For example, the name, "Jose."

Non-Spanish speakers will pronounce it something like "Ho-zay"

That's how I remember Harry Caray pronouncing it. And he would pronounce "Hernandez" as "Her-naan-dees".

Sorry for staying off the main topic here, but what is the correct pronunciation of the letter "e" in spanish? In 4 years of high school spanish and a college minor in spanish, I was always taught that it was pronounced like we say the letter "a"in english.

And so we finally put this conversation to rest, what is the correct pronunciation of Yoennis?

I'll leave the correct answer to the native Spanish speakers (and I'm curious as well), but my guess would be something like "io-ènnis" (as I suspect the name to be a derivative of the Germanic "Johannes")

Isn't his name Yoenis not "Yoennis" or "Yoennes," like I have seen people use around here?

Wikipedia says Yoennis. Clearly this is correct.

It sounds like Yo-ni when this guy says it.

I've listened to that a few times and I can't even tell when he's supposed to be saying his name.

At the 2 second mark. The way HE says it, sounds like there's a bit of a jza (can't think of the right latters to decribe the sound, just listen closely to the video. Like it starts with a soft j sound jo e ni se peh dez.

Please don't.

I don't find this half as annoying as pages of discussion on how to say his name. Maybe that's just me being bitter after seeing new posts and mistakingly thinking it is new information.

It's bitterness. Trust me.

Luis Gonzalez = Louie Gon-ZAH-leez.
