I honestly don't see Theo/Jed spending $$ on him.

All signs point to you're wrong.

I suppose it's possible that McLeod's comments are all a smokescreen. As are all the visits they've made and talks they've had with the guy.

A smokescreen to what? That's for you to decide.

It's not about me being wrong, its a belief that Theo/Jed will not overspend on a FA or prospect, they have stated in numerous times and proved it with Prince/Fielder/Darvish and Wilson, all at one time were available.

I don't deny they will spend money, perhaps I should have clarified that they won't overspend

Then they'll never sign a big name FA.

The way I understand Theo's strategy is that he won't sign a high priced player for past performance at this stage of this build. I do believe when he is ready to strike, he will have no problem paying for a named FA (such as Fielder etc). when the time is right.

The Cespedes contract is interesting in the fact that he appears to have stupid talent, just hasn't had a change to display on MLB level (yet).

Wait, what? So they won't pay for past performance...and they also won't pay for unproven talent?

I point you to the Darvish example and what we offered him... They appear to not be willing to overpay for FA or non-MLB talent (Japan, DR etc...).

Do we know how much we offered Darvish? It could have been a mere 250 bucks less than the Rangers for all we know.

None of us have any clue what the Cubs bid for Darvish.

For all we know they bid 50.9MM.

haha

Why would he have an issue playing for the Marlins? Too close to Cuba or something?

Yeah, this makes little sense to me. It would be like me -- a white dude -- not wanting to play in Seattle or Denver.

Perhaps he is afraid of a Commie hit squad taking him out...

A few tweets I hadn't seen posted:

@BenBadler MLB says Cespedes is a free agent and can negotiate with teams, but he still must get OFAC unblocking license before he can officially sign.

jimcallisBA Cespedes. But Jackson is good & a safer bet. @jeffster130: Better prospect Brett Jackson or Cespedes? #Cubs

@Kevin_Goldstein Talking to scouting exec about Cespedes. I predict Cubs,he predicts mystery team. Both agree that $$$ will exceed Chapman

Im not sure if this was discussed earlier or not, but is his first name pronounced like Yo-ehnes or Yo-anes? Im being serious b/c in spanish, the letter "e" is pronounced like we say the letter "a" in english. If its the latter, there will definitely be childish jokes about his name.

Not really true, but people who speak Spanish poorly with bad accents pronounce it that way.

Meh, we survived the Fukudome jokes.

I've been pronouncing it Yo-niss, apropos of nothing

How is that not true? That is the correct pronunciation of the letter "e".

What kind of time frame are we looking at now, Could this be over by Sunday?

Who knows. It could be over tomorrow, it could be over in two weeks, with the latter being more likely. Given how close camp is, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it was over by this time next week.

Not to get off on a tangent, but no, it's not.

For example, the name, "Jose."

Non-Spanish speakers will pronounce it something like "Ho-zay"

The correct pronunciation, if we're going to use English phonetics, would be closer to "ho-seh."

Same goes for Jesus. For some reason, the way it's taught to people, they say something like "hay-zeus"...it's really more like "heh-soos"

But this has more to do with the fact that people who learn languages after a certain age pretty much inevitably learn them with accents. I can assure you, "Ho-say" is not the correct way to pronounce Jose. It's just the way people who grow up speaking English and then learn Spanish (or just try to say the name) say it.

I took 4 years of Spanish in high school and I have no clue what you are talking about with regard to the pronunciation of Jose.

I am a native speaker. I'm clearly being picky here, but essentially you're trying to apply English sounds to another language.

Those samples are obviously correct, but if that sounds to you the same as "ho-say," therein lies the problem. It doesn't to me. Maybe it's a nuance that can't be picked up by the untrained ear. There's a reason, after all, that people who learn languages after a certain age will have accents, inevitably.

I'll put it another way... "ho-say" sounds as off to me as the way a person with a Chinese or Indian or French some other accent speaking English would sound to you. Even if their grammar/usage and whatever else is 100% on point.

The Spanish you learn in a midwestern Spanish class is going to sound markedly different from the Spanish you'll hear in most Spanish communities.
