CHICAGO – Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein this afternoon released the following statement after traveling to Florida to inform manager Mike Quade that he would not return to the club for the 2012 season.

“Jed Hoyer and I had an all-day meeting with Mike last Thursday at Wrigley Field, and Mike and I continued our dialogue with a lengthy phone conversation yesterday after the press conference. Today, I flew to Florida to inform Mike in person that the Cubs have decided not to bring him back as our manager for the 2012 season.

“When I joined the Cubs last week, I knew that Mike had a reputation as an outstanding baseball guy, as a tireless worker, and as a first-rate human being. After spending some time with him this past week, it became apparent to me that Mike’s reputation is well deserved. His passion, knowledge of the game, commitment, and integrity stood out immediately. While Mike is clearly an asset to any organization and any major league staff, Jed and I believe that the Cubs would benefit long-term from bringing in a manager for 2012 who can come in with a clean slate and offer new direction.

“The managerial search process begins immediately. We are looking for someone with whom and around whom we can build a foundation for sustained success. The next manager must have leadership and communication skills; he must place an emphasis on preparation and accountability; he must establish high standards and a winning culture; he must have integrity and an open mind; and he must have managerial or coaching experience at the major league level.

“I want to thank Mike for his nine years of excellent service to the Cubs, and we certainly wish him well in the future.”

We can rule out Francona.

Or anyone from the Red Sox front off-....ohhhhh, riiiiiiight.

It's interesting how the "beer in the clubhouse" issue only became a thing with this collapse, but when they were the "drunken idiots" winning WS it was cool.

So far I love every decision made except for letting Ramirez go, and at least that is respectable, reasonable adn probably the right decision in the end. That's the complete opposite of every Cubs-related prior to Ricketts. It was always a bunch of completely bad decisions couple with the occasional one that was at least reasonable and respectable.

It seems far less personal bias and emotion is being used for decisions now.

We didn't let him go, he left.

I'm all for Martinez or Sveum. I'm probably higher on Sveum than I should be just because I read that he's really into the analytics with defensive positioning and all that immediately after reading about what Maddon does with it in that ESPN article.

I would love Francona. I asked this over in transactions though, how about the guy who's great friends with the best hitter of our era and just retired?

Well, technically he hasn't gone anywhere, but it seems pretty clear they expected him to void his option, and have prepared from the beginning to move past Ramirez.

It's not just the beer. It's the "players manager" style. There's less accountability in general assumed in that. Francona was/is considered a players manager. Not to mention that the anecdotal lax approach to conditioning taken by some of the Red Sox players this year was one of the many scapegoat excuses. Ultimately, the GM places that on the manager, whether right or wrong. I'm not taking a position for or against that idea, frankly, with a well assembled team, I'm pretty sure that most managerial candidates won't cost or gain many wins.

No interest on my part.

I doubt that's what it would take to land Pujols, although if it did, I would reconsider.

I think you are putting way too much stock in the Boston ownership's hitjob.

Bernstein is saying that his "baseball source" says that Francona is very much in the picture.

I'm conflicted on TLR.

But I wonder if the pixie dust belonged to him or the Cardinals. And it seems like we'd be getting a guy just playing out the string, like Piniella.

Is it likely Theo already has his Manager lined up and ready to go?

My guess is he has a pretty good idea. Not sure he went so far as to line it up, because you run the risk of a credibility gap with regards to how they have handled the Quade thing.

I'd put up with LaRussa for a year or two if he brought Pujols for 5 or 6.

Maybe he can tell Pujols to stop calling his own hit and runs...
