what's so attractive about dave martinez? is it only the fact that's been the bench coach under joe maddon for the past few seasons?

Largely because Id love to have Maddon but if I can't have the master I'll take the pupil. Plus Dave is a former Cub (not that that matters much).

I read something about the preparation he does in advance of each series and was pretty impressed. Can't remember where, though, and I'm onsite at a customer today (shouldn't even be on here!).

Would it be safe to say if we had Mike Maddux managing and Greg Maddux as pitching coach that our pitching staff would be [expletive] awesome?

No.

At least with Lovullo having coached 1B with Toronto last year, he does have ML coaching experience.

He does the groundwork for Maddon as far as the prep work and plays a large role in the managerial decisions. He would definitely be a player's manager.

You may have paid more attention to Tampa than anyone else here for the past few years (obviously). Can you give a somewhat detailed scouting report on Martinez?

I think the guys who will actually be on that staff would be a bit more important than the manager and pitching coach.

Francona also is, FWIW (again, not much at all).

The guys on ESPN 1000 are reporting that the Cards have been given permission to interview Sandberg to replace LaRussa. I know most everyone here does not want him to manage the Cubs, as do I, but I would hate to see him in that uniform.

I wouldn't mind at all. If they want to give Sandberg an interview over Tito, go for it.

Sandberg could be wearing uniform of the Hitlerburg Kidtouchers for all I care so long as he's not managing the Cubs.

You don't even want to know what their sign for "bunt" is.

If Sandberg went to the Cardinals, I can't even begin to imagine the apocalypse of meatball rage that would follow.

He's good enough for the World Series champs but not us?

OH MY GOD

Abbatacola just said he'd give up Castro in a SECOND for Maddon. And Bernstein and Boers said it was a good question. hahahahahahahahahaha

I couldn't even bear to listen to CTL last night after they had Hoyer on. The big media outlets around here are complete neanderthals when it comes to baseball analysis.

They're definitely overstating the importance of a manager. A strong avg. player at a premium position in his early arby years is well worth more than the Tampa coaching, scouting, and player development staff.

Bernstein isn't an idiot about baseball. It's so bizarre when he comes up with ridiculous opinions like this. I don't know if it's just them saying outrageous, Bayless-esque, stuff on purpose sometimes, because he sometimes has ridiculously bad opinions out of nowhere.

Bernstein is so much better when Boers is on vacation and Holmes is filling in, or Bernstein is by himself.

That opinion is a perfect example of it, actually.

He realizes that Maddon is a HELL of a manager, just like he realizes that Theo was a great hire and actually recognizes the real reasons why (unlike a lot of the local media), but then he says they are worth trading Castro for.

I really don't like what the Cubs are doing here. I like that they took the courtesy to let Ryno know that he won't be a candidate, but why not? He is as qualified as anyone else who they would hire. What do we really have to lose?

I'm loving the comments section under Muskat's column.

Gawd there's a lot of really stupid people out there.
