Ryne Sandberg

5 years as minor league manager

16 year big league player (HoF)

He also quit on his team in the middle of a season and really only had a 14.5 year career.

Would you want Zambrano managing the Cubs?

Comparing Z and Ryno is quite comical.

I sort of glossed over that. Pretty clear his resume doesn't stand up against the other two, or to Dave Martinez who I forgot to add since those are the three names bandied about at the moment.

I really just don't think he is as underqualified as some here seem to think. No one knows what it is like to manage in the majors, until they have actually done it? Managers with experience are unemployed for a reason.

That's true. Z came back to the team almost immediately while Ryno actually followed through on screwing everybody over.

And here we all thought Cindy did the screwing in that house.

Lots of Sandberg hate on this board. Some even are in their glory that Dave Martinez slept (allegedly) with his wife. Pretty sick. Quite honestly, you'd thing Sandberg played for the Cardinals the way he is blasted on here.

Ryno has been a minor league manager since 06. He knows the game, and from all accounts is a talented teacher.

As long as we are talking experience, who are we talking?

I think you need to differentiate the player from the manager. He was/is one of my favorite players and part of me doesn't want to see him get the job because I think he will fail and I don't want to see him that way.

He was a great player, from a different era when bunting worked and the daily double with Dernier helped the '84 team make the playoffs. This is a different age though and baseball has changed. I fear that he has not, have you see his tendencies as a minor league manager? He manages the game as if it was the 80's (giving away too many outs).

Personally, I hope Sandberg ends up managing an AL team, has some moderate success, and loses every game he manages against the Cubs (especially if he ever faces up with them in the WS). What's wrong with that?

and, for the record, he seemed pretty cool with theo calling him and telling him he wasn't in the running and also gave a positive remark about the new cubs brain trust.

Which is why, other than a couple of managers or former managers, the most popular choices are bench coaches. Who, btw, have more experience coaching than Sandberg.

Let me ask you this. If the Cubs hired some no name who had the same level of coaching experience as Sandberg over people with far more experience, would you like the hire? If you honestly say you'd be fine with it, why? You'd rather have some guy with 5 years experience over guys with 8-10-or more years experience, and much more varied experience at that?

Or are you wanting Sandberg because he's a Cubs icon that now has a little bit of coaching background?

no, I'm trying to understand your implication that Ryne Sandberg = Zambrano

It's okay to quit on your team as long as you do it quietly.

(also it helps if you are white)

And you did not blame your teammates for your own problems. More specifically to Z, being a crappy pitcher and blaming everyone else.

For the record, I would love to see Ryno as a coach on the 2012 Cubs. 3B coach, fielding coordinator or maybe Castro's personal defensive coach. Put the guy in a position where he can have a positive impact while he gains some experience with the new organizational philosophy. If he buys in, then maybe he gets a shot when Francona retires after winning the 2013 series with the Cubs.

He retired in the middle of a season, but actually did retire and didn't just freak out.

Bingo.

Then that's a horrible reason to select him.

The awful things said about Sandberg here border on insane.

And then there are the people who are just ignorant talking about how he'll have Pujols bunt in the 1st inning.

He was told he wouldn't be interviewed and then went out of his way to praise the Cubs.

He probably won't be the greatest manager, but it takes people with some serious problems in their lives to have such bitterness towards someone like Sandberg.
