2011 Chicago Bulls Offseason thread

Could it be as easy as getting Rose someone else the opposition has to guard? I'm convinced if the Bulls had a Jamal Crawford they'd beaten Miami, the Heat wouldn't have been able to completely ignore the SG. They wouldn't have been to double team Rose with Wade and James nor sag into the paint to cut off Rose' paths to the hoop.

Yeah, pretty much. Wade actually did a really good job on Deng when Lebron was shutting down Rose. But you give the Bulls another guy that can score off the dribble, and the Heat has to decide which 2 they want to guard of Rose, Deng, or the SG. I do worry though, that if you get a guy like Monta Ellis or Jamal Crawford then the Heat can just play them with James and Wade respectively and have a defensive advantage both places due to their size and the fact they don't lose the quickness battle by much. And then they focus their D on stopping Deng with the other 3. So, ideally, I'd like some size alongside DRose.

What would REALLY help is to have a person that creates from the front court. Even having two creators can be more easily shutdown if they both are from the same spot on the court.

I mean Terry, Kidd, and Barea are nice players and good creators, but they aren't as effective without a big man who also creates. Just makes it much more difficult to guard both spots on the floor.

Obviously we won't be getting that though, so a SG is the best we can do, and it may very well be enough anyways.

Let the Dwight Howard sweepstakes begin. He just announced he won't sign an extension and he will reconsider wanting to stay if they don't improve the team.

The Dwight Howard sweepstakes doesn't begin until there's a labor agreement. Too much up in the air for anyone to know how that will all go down.

If he really decides to go to free agency Bulls won't be getting him. We will only get him via trade.

However if he does prepare to hit Free Agency, the contracts of Brewer, Korver, and Watson are suddenly extremely valuable and could land us another top notch player.

So the new owners proposal is leaking some:

  • $2B guaranteed to players in the next 10 years
$62 cap ($4M higher than current)
Some exemptions to cap (bird rights and MLE) but more restrictions on use of these
They are calling it a flex cap, though I'm unsure how thats different than a soft cap
In essence a 8% pay cut for players the first year
    League wants 10 year commitment

I'm reading its similar to the NHL cap. Any hockey fans want to weigh in on what hockey's salary cap system is like?

Not sure it all makes sense, but we just have bits and pieces right now.

Hockey's cap is based on average annual salary over the life on the contract, so there's no need to necessarily front or back load any deals. Some teams successfully tricked the system by signing guys to 12+ year deals with the final 4 years paying the player $1 million or some small sum, so that the average salary was lower, but the NHL put a stop to that.

Yea I knew that about hockey, but these articles are talking more about how teams can operate under/over the cap.

Doing a little research, wikipedia tells me NHL teams can go a little over the cap for bonuses. Is that accurate?

You can exceed the cap by I think 7% to pay bonuses. Also, I know what happened with the Hawks is that Toews bonus for winning the Conn Smythe would have put the Hawks over the cap and the 7% for that year, so they were applied to the next years team. That's part of the reason we were so strapped last year.

In news of the "no duh" variety, the Bulls exercised their option on Taj.

Damn nice to have him under control until through 2013. A lot of people are already bemoaning the fact that we wont be able to re-sign him after the contracts up, but I'm not so sure its a bad thing. Remember, he's someone that came into the league at age 25, and he still has a limited offensive game. Very valuable player to have, but if someone in 2013 comes around and wants to give him starter money and a long deal, I have no problem at all with that.

"I asked Thibs what he was going to do, and he said he was going to watch film," Korver said. "And I was like, 'How much film can you watch? You going to watch every game again?' And he said, 'Yep.'

•The Charlotte Bobcats never should have happened. You know how I know this? Because Michael Jordan spent about 20 bucks in actual cash to buy them two years ago, that's how. If the Bobcats break their stadium lease and move somewhere else, they'd have to pay the city of Charlotte $150 million. So it would make no sense to move them, unless … you know … Jordan moves them to Chicago (where he still lives), plays in the United Center (where he has a giant statue), ropes Oprah into being a minority owner, then quickly becomes a well-run version of the Clippers to the Bulls' version of the Lakers.19 Not only would they cover the $150 million pretty quickly, but that would give the league six teams in the three biggest TV markets. And that's a bad thing … why?

What do you guys think? Would you root for this team? Would it work?

I don't know how the sharing arena thing would work, but I wouldn't root for that team. And even with Jordan, it would take a lot to get the city of Chicago to root for them. But it seems like it would work for the Bobcats financially.

Weren't there some rumors fairly recently that Memphis could end up as a 2nd Chicago team?

When the Grizzlies were trying to move from Vancouver, Chicago was one of the potential cities. Michael Heisley, the Grizzlies owner, is from Chicago and thought a second team in the south suburbs would be a great idea. They even had the Dixmoor mayor on board with plans to build an arena there. At the time, the Bulls were awful and there were no signs of them getting better anytime soon, but they still were in the top 5-10 in the league in attendance.

My understanding is that Reinsdorf did everything in his power to block the Grizz from moving into Chicago. I imagine he'd do the same to any other team. Doesn't sound like a realistic idea for Charlotte to leave. And once upon a time the Hornets were a pretty successful franchise there. And from things I've read, they have a bad debt situation. The article mentioned being Chicago's version of Clippers.... The Clippers have zero debt. That has to be extremely helpful in keeping them profitable, along with keeping costs down of course.

I'd root for them 78 times a year. I think you could find enough casual basketball fans in the city to come out and support a second basketball team.
