Despite the "reports" we were going to make a run at him, I never actually thought it would happen. The backlash Albert would get for coming here probably was not worth the extra money to him. Theo and Jed have a plan and I'm confident it's a good one.

The backlash would've been local only. If it was a difference of $30-40M, why would he care about any backlash?

There's other reasons compelling him to stay, but I don't think a bunch of crazy St. Louis fans being mad at him is among them.

He obviously feels a sense of loyalty to the Cardinals fans and it really would be a slap in the face to them to come here. I just never felt Albert would leave the Cardinals to come to the Cubs.

How do you say this in response to that question, and then half an hour later pretend that you were saying he wouldn't leave if the money was similar?

I DEMAND THAT YOU RECONCILE THIS.

Please. No more.

Personally, I'm disappointed how willing teams have been to offer Pujols 9 years. I've been a pretty big advocate for spending on one of the 1B, but there's a line for everyone, and early indications are that both Pujols and Fielder may crossing it for me.

it really looks like Kelly, Rizzo (and Fuentes) and $160M for Adrian Gonzalez's 28-35 seasons is going to look like a steal when Pujols and Fielder end up signing

The St. Louis Cardinals have turned their attention to the prized free agent this week, baseball insiders have confirmed with ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. That comes days after the Miami Marlins met with Pujols and reportedly offered him a 9-year $225 million deal.

This says it's confirmed that the Cardinals have turned their attention to Pujols, not that the Marlins offer was 9/225. In fact, it refers to the it being "reportedly" offered.

I'll only say this about Pujols rumor: Remember it and the source. And on Friday find him to congratulate or rip him for it. #fiction

About an hour and a half after Corcoran tweeting Pujols will re-sign he tweeted, "Despite official denials I have no reason to amend the Pujols story. I believe it to be accurate."

Heyman says otherwise...

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that that Marlins' offer to Albert Pujols was "well, well below" $200 million.

It was a nine-year proposal, but the average annual salary was not substantial enough for Pujols and his representatives to take it seriously. The Cardinals still look to be the front-runner for the 31-year-old slugger and will remain on top until another team steps forward. Miami's interest was never for real.

/Waits for "Marlins interest was never real, unless it was" Heyman joke.

It's becoming an NSBB meme.

I don't love it, but its better than other recent memes

Speculation, but potentially good news nonetheless......

We already know that the Marlins have made Albert Pujols a contract offer and that the Cardinals met with his agent today in Milwaukee, but Yahoo's Tim Brown says those are just two of at least three teams "actively jockeying" for Pujols' services. While Brown is unsure of the identity of the third team, he guesses it could be the Rangers or Cubs.

And for the record, I'd take 9/225 for Pujols and feel like I got a really good deal.

Considering I'd have been OK with 6 for 200, if we're in this hunt at all, while 9 years is too long, 225 is cheap compared to what I was thinking.

That actually makes the Loney rumor more viable as it fits two of those criteria whereas Fielder is a below average Fielder. If the brain trust is serious about improving the defense, prince probably not their guy. Unless they are willing to sacrifice D at first for his bat which is very possible.

Its a [expletive] bleacher report rumor. Stop yourself. It has absolutely no basis in reality.

I'm not basing anything off the bleacher report article. Perhaps I worded that wrong. I meant that it would make sense that the Cubs would be interested in trading for Loney, given that he's a lefty and a nice defensive first baseman.

You know who else is a lefty and a nice defensive first baseman? Carlos Pena. Plus he takes walks and hits for power.

Trading for Loney would make no sense.
