Honestly, though, with it not seeming like we are all that interested (and if we are, and do make a real offer, awesome - really hope we do), him going to Florida is not the worst thing in the world. Him actually leaving St. Louis, or getting St. Louis to significantly hamstring themselves (I tend to think the former is more likely to happen anyway) will go a long way toward making that team suck.

You aren't signing Albert Pujols with an eye to what he can give you when he's 39.

Right. But it still has to be a factor.

The former or the latter?

That's both absurd and was never going to be in the ballpark as to total value he'd get. If you didn't think the Cubs would have to beat the Cards' lowball 200/9 offer from last year, then you were never really thinking the Cubs could reasonably get him.

From what I understand, the Cardinals' 200/9 offer was structured to try to prop up the nominal dollar value with deferments and severe backloading. It was close to a true $180 offer in terms of real value.

I think him leaving is more likely than St. Louis ratcheting up their offer significantly, especially if Florida's offer is just a starting point for negotiations.

okay, that's what you wrote but I thought maybe you meant otherwise when you threw in that "anyway" comment. Thanks

Not sure how accurate this is, but saw this posted in another forum...

As @stljccorcoran admitted, his scoop is just that, his own, and not that of KTRS Sports. Still, he was right on La Russa

Still think it's more likely he's leaving?

If I cared about having egg on my face, I wouldn't have posted it.

But ten minutes ago I did.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. If the Cards meet the offer the Marlins gave him, it could be enough for him. Maybe being the highest paid player in history isn't all that important or maybe he's already gotten the picture it's just not going to happen.

If it is true, I just hope they had to push their offer up enough to handicap them from other moves.

I think even if they didn't have to push it up much, it'll still hamstring them.

Nightengale just said they've re=engaged in talks, so I guess it's possible he just wants the Cards to come up a bit. Heyman just mentioned Prince's magic number is 8 years and 200 mill. No surprise there.

Despite the "reports" we were going to make a run at him, I never actually thought it would happen. The backlash Albert would get for coming here probably was not worth the extra money to him. Theo and Jed have a plan and I'm confident it's a good one.

The backlash would've been local only. If it was a difference of $30-40M, why would he care about any backlash?

There's other reasons compelling him to stay, but I don't think a bunch of crazy St. Louis fans being mad at him is among them.

they would've been mad for like two minutes and then remembered the stupid best fans in baseball gimmick and had no choice to give him a standing ovation every at bat his first series in st louis.

He obviously feels a sense of loyalty to the Cardinals fans and it really would be a slap in the face to them to come here. I just never felt Albert would leave the Cardinals to come to the Cubs.
