Can he set up Marmol?

I'm not following. Are you suggesting that that's a problem area, because assuming that Marmol can rebound, the pen would be the one part of this team that would be good to go if the season were to start today.

No I was responding to the post above joking that its the Hendry era all over again.

The Marlins are scheduled to meet with free agent first baseman Albert Pujols in Miami within the next few days, possibly as soon as Saturday, a source tells Matthew Leach of MLB.com.

It's tough to gauge how serious the Marlins might be about signing Pujols, who figures to command a contract comfortably north of $200MM, but they have already been linked, to varying degrees, to a handful of free agents, such as Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, C.J. Wilson, Mark Buehrle and Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, throughout the early goings of the offseason. It has been widely reported that the Marlins will increase their payroll substantially in 2012 as they head into a new ballpark at the site of now-demolished Orange Bowl.

If the Marlins could afford him, I could see him going there. This Miami thing is rather scary because I'm not sure anyone knows just how high they are willing to let their payroll go. All I've read is that they are willing to raise their payroll "substantially". They are supposedly close to signing Reyes so it may effect things, but if they are willing to go up to 100 million, that means they have about $44 million to play with.

Throw in likely arb awards and you're at 62M for 11 players, leaving them with a lot less cash than us to spend.

Interesting. They are doing 75% for marketing their new stadium and 25% to make the team better, so I could see them signing Pujols and Reyes and going with league minimum players. Might have to trade Hanley to keep it under $110 mil or so which would make no sense at all.

“We truly believe Mitch’s career is ahead of him,” said Ryan. “Making a seven-or-eight year deal for Fielder or Pujols is not something our organization is prepared to do. I very much expect Mitch Moreland to be our first baseman next year.”

One competitor down...lots more to go.

I'm really starting to think the Marlins will get one or the other of Pujols or Fielder.

Seems like it'll be somewhat hard for them to do once they sign Reyes, given what SSR posted last night.

I...am not. We've seen this game from them before.

It's gonna be Alou, Bobby Bo, Fernandez, and Leiter all over again. Just you wait.

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals have not yet adjusted their offer to free agent Albert Pujols.

We wouldn't really expect them to, as they might as well wait for a market for him to develop first and then they can adjust as they see fit. The Cardinals reportedly extended a nine-year pact for just over $200 million to Pujols in spring training. Pujols is expected to visit the Marlins soon in his first free agent stop.

Would not be upset at all if Reyes winds up with the Marlins and the Rangers are indeed not in the running for Pujols or Fielder. At that point, I'd think our main competitors would be WAS, TOR, BAL, and STL for those two (STL only for Pujols, obviously).

I also recall reading on MLB Trade Rumors (I know, I know) awhile back that the Mariners were allegedly interested in throwing a bunch of money at Fielder. Regardless, if Theo and Co. see ANY merit whatsoever to pursuing a long-term deal with either of these guys, the landscape of competing bidders really could not be any more favorable. No NYY, BOS, PHI, or TEX. What more could you ask for.

Edited to add that I am assuming that the Marlins would not have the money to ink both Reyes AND one of Fielder / Pujols. New ballpark or not, I'd be floored if that franchise would be prepared to commit upwards of $40 million of its annual payroll to 2 players.

Did MLBTR revert back to a stetchy site once again?

Not sure about sketchy, but perhaps just liberal in terms of rendering headlines from the tweets or blog rumblings of local beat reporters, etc. I tend to think that generally speaking, where there's smoke there's fire, so I still check it and HardballTalk fairly regularly (moreso the latter).

Regardless, I can't really see Fielder signing with Seattle. Then again, this is a Scott Boras client we're talking about here.

Am I the only one who feels that there's a big part of the Cardinals organization that secretly hopes that someone else offer Pujols a ridiculous offer that they can't hope to match as long as it isn't within the division, especially The Cubs?

With no state income tax in Florida, the Marlins can offer a similar contract and put more $$$ in any FA pocket. They could sign Pujols and move Sanchez to 3rd or spin him for Geo Gonzalez.

I believe someone will offer Pujols a monster contract and he'll have to decide if he just wants the money on a so-so team or take less for a competitive team.

It seems conceivable the Marlins could get Reyes and Cespedes or Pujols. It looks they're going to try and acquire a pitcher through trade. Probably a very solid one, at that. They're going to most likely be very good next year. If they somehow got Reyes AND Pujols? Good lord.

Marlins Make Offers to Pujols, Reyes, Buehrle

By Mark Polishuk [November 11 at 5:03pm CST]

The Marlins have made "substantial offers" to both Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and have also offered a contract to Mark Buehrle, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (both Twitter links). The team met with Pujols today, Reyes on Wednesday and Buehrle on Tuesday but apparently already felt comfortable enough to make contract offers, though Heyman reports there is "nothing close" to a deal with any of the three.

Miami's aggressiveness is no surprise, given how the Marlins have been in hot pursuit of several top free agents already this offseason. It's unlikely that Pujols, Reyes or Buehrle would sign so early without fully exploring the market for their services, though a blow-away offer from the Marlins could change their minds.

The Marlins' payroll was expected to increase by as much as $35MM this winter, but signing Pujols, Reyes and Buehrle would add at least $60MM to the 2012 payroll. That's a big outlay for three players, but given how committed Jeffrey Loria is to put a competitive team into his new ballpark, we have been conservative with our estimates about how much the Marlins are willing to spend this winter.

Marlins arent [expletive] around. However, I highly doubt that 2 of the top 3 free agents will sign in mid November and they'll keep exploring.

How cute the Marlins are putting together a team to sell off in a couple of years. Hopefully Albert and his team realizes this.

How much extra are they going to have to offer up to get free agents to agree to wear those terrible new uniforms?
