if we don't make a major trade, our payroll is going to be like 110 million next season, now that pujols, fielder, wilson, cespedes, and darvish are all too expensive and going elsewhere.

Could anyone ever see Walter Payton leaving the Bears to play for the Packers? How would that have felt? Magic to the Celtics? Bird to the Lakers? Jordan to the Pistons?

These are all very modern comparisons.

Well, obviously, Soriano's contract is absolutely killing us. Even if the Cubs pay 75% of the contract to move him, you'd have to find a taker. There just seems to be very little interest in him. If he's here, we just are not going to be able to shell out another 200M for another player when Soriano is owed more than 50M still.

It is not absolutely killing us.

It's a bee sting or something.

Of course we can. Our payroll was $135 million the last two years, and we have quite a few spots being filled by cheap, pre-FA players.

Doesn't matter.

Could you imagine Favre going to the Vikings??

Could you imagine LeBron leaving his hometown fans in Cleveland? Never!

That's not the Bears and he took a major beating for it.

He obviously feels a sense of loyalty to the Cardinals fans and it really would be a slap in the face to them to come here.

He may also feel that having given St. Louis about 8 WAR a season at below market value for over a decade (not to mention 3 pennants, 2 WS championships) he deserves to be rewarded. I don't know that he'll come to the Cubs, but I think he will go where he is most appreciated, i.e. most handsomely paid.

Newsflash - the Vikings are major rivals to the Packers. Especially in the Favre era.

Yea, because Cleveland and Miami are arch rivals. Cleveland does not even have an enemy in hoops.

Oh, so these silly romantic notions of yours only apply when the player movement involved is between primary rivals?

His reputation took a major beating because he sent pictures of his dick to a Jets employee.

When the Vikes were in the NFC championship game, no one outside of Wisconsin cared that he had "betrayed" the Packers.

LeBron leaving the way he did is a far bigger FU to his hometown fans and his former franchise than anything Pujols could hope to do.

And he took a major beating for it. And he also was not WANTED by the Packers at the time. If STL flat out said: "ALlbert, you're done and we do not need you, we have Aaron Rodgers waiting" that's different. STL still wants Albert to stay and offered him a pretty damn good contract to do so.

Don't forget the 15 retirements and his pissy attitude toward Rodgers.

Him going to a rival of Green Bay had nothing to do with it.

Johnny Damon would never betray the Red Sox and go to the Yankees!

This is a silly tangent. If a player is leaving a team, he clearly doesn't care enough about who they don't like to rule out their rivals. In fact, it might just be the opposite.

And if being a rival means nothing, David, why does Mark Buerhle want absolutely nothing to do with the Cubs?

You're right, he doesn't. That's why he told his agent to cut off all contact with them!

Where did you read that?

LeBron left a bigger max contract in Cleveland to go to miami. And he announced it on an ESPN special.

So if Buehrle gets the best offer out there and it's from the Cubs, why not come pitch here?
