Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame broadcaster Marty Brennaman:

"What a great loss for the Cubs and Cubs fan everywhere. Ron was such a wonderful person and friend. It is so unfortunate that he never became a Hall of Famer, as he should have long ago. It won't be the same for me when the Reds and Cubs play next season and in seasons to come. My condolences to his family and his Cubs family."

It won't be the same? So you will hate them more?

I think Marty is probably the last person I care to hear from on Ron Santo.

Mike Schmidt FTW

My all-time favorite Pat and Ron call.

August 7, 2001. Need I say more?

I haven't posted much on NSBB lately, but John Davis used to post these clips. (I think his name was John Davis. From Evanston). So I credit him with much of my early 2000 cubs mp3's. My man BCVM has done fine work since.

I have video if anyone is interested

Ron Santo was the most unintentionally funny person in the history of the world, the greatest Cubs fan there ever was and a constant presence in my life since I began listening to games on the radio a decade ago. When I decided to finally buy a Cubs jersey a year and a half ago, I didn't want a current player because I knew it would have a limited shelf life. I wanted one that would always have usefulness. Needless to say I picked Ron.

I saw Ron on my way up to my seats at a game last year against Oakland, being escorted to the booth in his cart. I was too shell-shocked at the randomness of the encounter to really do anything, much less ask for an autograph, and I just kept walking. He sort of looked at me as I passed, probably noticing my jersey. Not saying hi or anything to Ron Santo will probably be one of those small regrets that I'll always have.

R.I.P. Ronnie. Your replacement in the booth will be better at his job, but there is no way on earth they will be as fun to listen to.

I can say without any fear of hyperbole that listening to Pat and Ron on the radio back in the day is the reason I'm a Cubs fan. I'd go on about him being a HOFer and all that but it would be foolish to think something as silly as that could possibly hope to define him.

Thank you Ron, I'll miss you terribly. RIP.

I met Ronnie Santo several times over the 20 straight years I went to Spring Training. He was always nice and gracious to us fans.

I miss him already!

Interesting that in the Grace interview they asked him if he would want to come back and follow in Santo's footsteps as a color analyst for the Cubs, and I expect to her him refer to loving the Arizona job or something but the only obstacle he mentioned was that Bob Brenley was one of the very best colormen in the game and he couldnt consider that position when a guy like that is in place.

At least he was classy about it.

As someone previously said, I never thought I'd be so affected by a celebrity death.

We'll miss you Ronny. I can't imagine what it'll be like to listen to the Cubs on the radio without you.

Hard to keep a straight face today. That Pat Hughes interview isn't helping.

I'm pretty sure I heard Mark Grace say on XM Radio that Ron Santo was a better 3B statistically than Mike Schmidt.

I was listening to that interview too and it was actually Jim Duquette who said it. And Kevin Kennedy followed it up saying that he was 2nd to Brooks Robinson in that era for defense and was clearly the better offensive player in all categories. Jim then continued by saying that Ron matched Schmidt in many offensive categories.

Regardless, good to see Ron finally get the accolades and respect that he deserved. Too unfortunate that it came too late for him to hear.

RIP RS.

Shove it up your gluteus maximus, Veterans Committee voters. It would be fitting if Ron's family refuses to participate when Ron finally gets elected posthumously.

Absolutely. They think he didn't deserve when he was alive to appreciate it? Well his resume doesn't change once he's dead.

As I heard someone say today, they can go pound sand.
