2006 - In Week 2, Roy Williams guarantees a victory over the Bears in Week 2 at Soldier Field. The Bears win 34-7 and after the game Williams talks about how close they were to putting up 40 points on the Bears.

2006 - After the game in Week 2, Williams told reporters, "You can all run with this: We will win the (next) game." That game was in Week 16, and the Bears won that one as well despite playing only one half with their starters.

2007 - In the preseason, Kitna proclaims that the Lions, coming off a 3-13 season, are going to win 10+ games in the upcoming year. He looks prophetic when the Lions begin the year 6-2, including 2 wins over the previous year's NFC Champ, the Bears. However, the team randomly collapses and loses 7 of its last 8 games to fall 3 short of Kitna's prediction

2007 - Tommie Harris remarks that "Detroit don't come into our stadium and win." The Lions come into Soldier Field and win 16-7.

2009 - Coming off an 0-16 season, Kevin Smith has this to say about his team's chances in the upcoming season: "I won’t make a prediction about how many games we’re going to win, but I will say this: We will definitely make the playoffs this season. Believe it or not we weren’t far off last year. Almost every game we could have won, we were one play or one player short." Detroit goes 2-14.

2010 - Despite injuries to their 1st and 2nd string QBs, leaving the inexperienced Drew Stanton to start, an undeterred Nate Burleson guarantees his 2-9 Lions will be victorious over the 8-3 Chicago Bears. Outcome of his guarantee TBD.

even for you, this is just the dumbest [expletive] ever

think about it, it's not like the Lions have a great success at drawing fans, they have to halfway figure this is some innocuous way of instilling a modicum of interest into otherwise meaningless affairs

it's pretty [expletive] weird to catalogue a list of it though

wait, there are lions/cubs fans that exist in the real world?

wait there are lions fans?

That's some kind of insane excuse. Why does Burleson care about attendance? Is there a bonus in his contract if the Lions draw a certain number of fans? Does part of his job involve working in marketing? He said some stupid [expletive] now, just like he said stupid [expletive] on the Seahawks. Burleson didn't do this because of the Lions...he did it because he wants those cameras to be pointed at him.

What scares me is that someone is due to be right about their guarantee. Let's hope it's not Burleson.

I was thinking the same thing too. Everytime one of these bozos make a guarantee against us I do tend to worry that they are gonna back it up with the most determined game of their lives.

Thankfully Burleson's "most determined game" probably bags him about 60 yards, tops.

Burleson's on the radio every single week having to say the same exact [expletive], "trust us, we're improving, we're working hard, best days are ahead of us, future is bright" for like 3 straight months. he's not specifically worried about attendance, but he talks to all the same fans calling up asking the same questions, trying to inspire hope or confidence, it's the same dumb rigmarole repeated ad nauseum

easy to figure why he felt like mixing it up

LOL. Don't be pissy because your team blows every year and has idiots who say things they can't back up.

every team in the avenue of professional sports has idiots who say things they can't back up. willy taveras said he was going to steal 100 bases last year, that's just indicative of him being an over-confident athlete rather than emblematic of some collective franchise-wide divorce from reality or whatever the [expletive] your dumb ass narrative actually is

Remember when zambrano got into the business of predicting wins?

at least the year he predicted we were going to win the world series and he the cy young we had the best record in baseball and he threw a no-hitter

so actually he did ok

If I noticed a bunch of Astros players making a bunch of dumb mostly unattainable guarantees that all don't come true, I'd probably make a list of them too out of entertainment. That's what I do, I look for funny patterns and point them out for entertainment purposes. The only reason you take offense to this instance is because you are irrationally defensive about the Lions for some reason and have some sort of insane vendetta against me that I find hilarious.

Didn't he predict 120 wins going into the 05 season?

I had a bad daydream yesterday. What if the Bears don't upgrade the line? Hopefully, it's BS but all this stuff about the line just needing time together. But it really doesn't seem like it.

The line has improved, and a lot of the credit is going to Garza being back at RG. Will he be brought back at 32-33 years old? He has 1 more year on his deal. Chris Williams is the team's highest regarded OL. Struggled at LT, but now is at LG when the OL is improving. Does he stay at LG? J'Marcus Webb has given the team plenty of reasons to bench him, but he's 22 and the team loves his upside. Does he stay at RT? Frank Omiyale is at LT, he played well enough to the coaches that Chris Williams didn't get a shot to get his job back. Does he stay at LT?

If all those answers are "YES", then you only have Kreutz at C, who is a FA. I can't imagine them bringing him back, but an upgrade at C is not nearly enough for this OL.

Saw a mock today at Walterfootball.com that has us taking a WR in the 1st round. Has us taking using the next two picks on the line though.

Burleson's comments add fuel to the fire

Thanks, Burleson. This is exactly what I wanted to happen.

What I really wish would have happened is for all the power rankings on Monday to show the Bears still in the mid-20's, with comments like "Philly was a fluke" and "This team just got lucky"

...then Burleson's comments.

....followed by a much more annoyed Urlacher and Briggs, talking about how they are disrespected and to hell with everyone!

But no, instead we get people saying we're good now, and Burleson, but then a magnanimous Urlacher & Briggs talking about how they understand where he's coming from, and yada yada.

Wrong mindset.

We definitely need to be cheering for the Eagles (somewhat) and against the Giants. The Giants are obviously a worse WC team for us to match up against because they have the H2H tiebreaker over us. But a couple of reasons why I think we should cheer for the Eagles to take the East. 1) We have the tiebreaker over the Eagles so if we tie in records, we will get the higher seed. Much more likely to get a bye in this scenario than one where the Giants are the East champs. 2) The Packers and Giants still have to play each other, thus guaranteeing that one of those scenarios will help us in one of our two playoff races (Division or WC).

If you think about it, the Bears are 2 games up on EITHER the Giants or Packers for a playoff spot. I am going to pretend that the Bucs will fade and not be a factor because its more likely than the other teams fading. So basically because the Giants and Packers play together, unless they tie which is highly unlikely, it is impossible for both to run the table. So either the Packers or Giants might as well be 7-5 right now and the other 8-4.

I am cheering for the Eagles because I have them in Survivor (facing off against a guy with the Bears), but as far as the Bears are concerned I'd have no problem cheering against them tonight. I want as many losses as possible between GB/PHI/NYG/TB/NO

I mean yeah I want them to lose more games than they win too. Especially to protect us against our hard schedule. But I'd prefer they win the East and the Giants fall to the WC or worse.

Even after reading UM's reasoning, I am failing to understand how it's good for the Eagles to win tonight. First of all, the Texans winning has zero negative effects on us.

Second of all, if the Eagles lose tonight and we win on Sunday, they become practically THREE games behind us, as we'll have 2 games on them plus the tiebreaker. If the Giants win their division they could get a higher seeding than us if we win our division, but at least we'd pretty much be guaranteed a WC spot over the Eagles if we lose the division to GB (I too am assuming the Bucs will fade). I guess others have more confidence in the Bears winning the division than I do. With the tough schedule to close out the season, I just want to get in the playoffs.

Ok, my whole point was to point out that it'd be much easier to get a bye if the Eagles are the champs, and the Giants in the WC race isnt the worst thing in the world since either them or the Packers are guaranteed to lose again this year, helping us in one race or the other.

I just didn't put together my thought very well. I don't want the Eagles to win tonight. I just want them to win the division instead of the Giants and/or both teams finish with a worse record than the Bears. If the Bears finish 3-2 (11-5), the Giants would have to go 4-1 to finish ahead, of the Bears and the Eagles 5-0.

It's a valid point, but you could also look at the Giants-Packers game in that one winning helps us in our own division and the other winning helps us towards a first-round bye, if the Giants do indeed take that division.

lol, in that Playoff Machine thing, I made a scenario where the Bears finish 12-4 and don't make the playoffs.

Edit: Also found another one where 3 NFC West teams make it.

If that happened, I'd be perfectly fine with no NFL in 2011. Hell I'll be pissed if 11-5 doesn't make it.

I still think its insane that the Pats went 11-5 a couple years back and didn't make the playoffs. How the hell is that not good enough to play in the playoffs? Heck, 10-6 and no playoffs makes me angry too.

The worst thing about that 12-4 and no playoffs scenario is that I think the NFC west team qualified for the playoffs at 8-8. Could you imagine the backlash if a 12-4 team didn't make the playoffs and an 8-8 team got a home playoff game?
