I think he has a point about league minimum guys getting fined $50k. They increase it to make it matter to the rich guys, but that hurts the regulars.

If that's his concern, perhaps he should be advocating that fines be assessed as a percentage of salary, rather than a "flat rate".

Where was he advocating a flat rate? I read that he said something about different levels.

Right...sorry...I just meant flat rate as in a set dollar amount. Instead of assessing a $50k penalty, assess 1% of salary penalty.

I think his "different levels" thing was in regards to severity of the hit, not necessarily to account for salary. At least that's how I read it.

I read it as a guy who doesn't have his union rep (Hillemeyer) around him all the time so he struggled to articulate what he meant. But I'm pretty sure he was suggesting smaller fines for lesser paid players. A strict % may be ridiculous though. Some guys could be getting $150,000 fines.

Yeah, it'd be better implemented as "X% of the player's salary not to exceed $Y"

Could be...Urlacher loves to talk, but isn't always good at it.

But isn't that the point? $50k might be a huge amount to one guy and nothing to another guy. A strict percentage would at least ensure a similar disincentive to everyone, regardless of salary/status.

EDIT: Bob's suggestion would work.

Yes, that is the reason why they went from $5,000 fines to $50,000, but they are probably going to have a hard time getting people to agree to $150,000.

Is Stanton the Lions 4th string QB? I could swear they had someone else qb a few games earlier in the year when Hill and Stafford were both still hurt. Can't remember who it was though.

So, in the first game the Bears were lucky to get to defend Shaun Hill, and in the second game the Bears are lucky to not get to defend Shaun Hill?

No he's the 3rd. They also have Zac Robinson out of Okla St.

I heard they were working out guys like JP Losman earlier in the week just so they could have someone thats played in the NFL there to back up Stanton.

If we don't blow out this team, we are either looking ahead too much or there's something really wrong.

2006 - In Week 2, Roy Williams guarantees a victory over the Bears in Week 2 at Soldier Field. The Bears win 34-7 and after the game Williams talks about how close they were to putting up 40 points on the Bears.

2006 - After the game in Week 2, Williams told reporters, "You can all run with this: We will win the (next) game." That game was in Week 16, and the Bears won that one as well despite playing only one half with their starters.

2007 - In the preseason, Kitna proclaims that the Lions, coming off a 3-13 season, are going to win 10+ games in the upcoming year. He looks prophetic when the Lions begin the year 6-2, including 2 wins over the previous year's NFC Champ, the Bears. However, the team randomly collapses and loses 7 of its last 8 games to fall 3 short of Kitna's prediction

2007 - Tommie Harris remarks that "Detroit don't come into our stadium and win." The Lions come into Soldier Field and win 16-7.

2009 - Coming off an 0-16 season, Kevin Smith has this to say about his team's chances in the upcoming season: "I won’t make a prediction about how many games we’re going to win, but I will say this: We will definitely make the playoffs this season. Believe it or not we weren’t far off last year. Almost every game we could have won, we were one play or one player short." Detroit goes 2-14.

2010 - Despite injuries to their 1st and 2nd string QBs, leaving the inexperienced Drew Stanton to start, an undeterred Nate Burleson guarantees his 2-9 Lions will be victorious over the 8-3 Chicago Bears. Outcome of his guarantee TBD.

yeah theres absolutely no way we should lose this game, if we do we're in biiiiiiiig trouble

i really hope the defense (and offense!) find a way to shine, maybe a 5 sack, multiple interception day?

defense still hasn't scored an interception yet this year, would like to see them break that streak

even for you, this is just the dumbest [expletive] ever

think about it, it's not like the Lions have a great success at drawing fans, they have to halfway figure this is some innocuous way of instilling a modicum of interest into otherwise meaningless affairs

it's pretty [expletive] weird to catalogue a list of it though

Posted

LOL. Don't be pissy because your team blows every year and has idiots who say things they can't back up.

I put together that list because it entertains the hell out of me and many other people.

Is the game getting blacked out in Detroit this weekend?

What scares me is that someone is due to be right about their guarantee. Let's hope it's not Burleson.

I was thinking the same thing too. Everytime one of these bozos make a guarantee against us I do tend to worry that they are gonna back it up with the most determined game of their lives.
