I remember once many years ago (in the 80s or 90s) there was a chance late in the season for Georgia to be SEC champion with an overall losing record, but it didn't happen. I believe there was a team higher in the standings but on probation and ineligible for a bowl game (it may have been Alabama, but I'm not positive).

It must have been the 90s because I don't think Bama was on probation in the 80s. They've been on probation so often, though, that I can't keep up with when they were and weren't.

Latest w/ Cam Newton: NCAA has made Auburn aware of potential eligibility issue. Now Auburn decides whether to risk playing him. Their risk.

What is the risk? If he's ineligible, they have to vacate all those wins and are screwed. What is the benefit of sitting him now?

I'm guessing if it comes out that Auburn knew they were playing a player that would be ruled ineligible that the punishments down the line would be more severe than if they got out in front of it.

That's my thought. I'd keep playing him, though. Might as well try to win the title and then make them vacate it since at least half your wins would be vacated anyway.

I haven't seen that the NCAA made contact with Auburn today reported anywhere else yet...but I did just read that Cam was on the team bus to the team's hotel in Montgomery

I doubt a decision would be made in time to affect the title game, but the looming potential of ineligibility and a possibly vacated BCS champion might be enough to get some voters to go with someone other than Auburn.

Bond and Rogers are supposed to be interviewed by the FBI next Tuesday per one of the articles I read and will turn over supporting evidence to them at that time. If they have evidence that is truly damning to Cam, then I imagine he'll be ruled ineligible soon after that.

It may move faster, but the NCAA is generally incredibly slow about making decisions. It'll be interesting to see how quickly they move here.

I realize it's highly unlikely but what would happen if Newton was found to be ineligible sometime between the end of the regular season and the national title game? Say Auburn goes undefeated and makes the title game but then two weeks later, he's declared ineligible. Do they just redo all the bowl matchups?

I think so, but I also think that's why this issue is moving so fast now.

Also if Newton's father asked for money but never received anything would there still be a penalty against him?

...not sure if this is reliable or not, but Cam's father admits to having conversations with ex-MSU player about potential under the table payments...?

http://www.wsbtv.com/sports/25778803/detail.html

The article says Cecil maintains that no money ever exchanged hands, Cam nor Cam's mother knew anything about Cecil's discussions with MSU, and no discussions involving money ever took place with Auburn University.

again...no clue if this is reliable.

edit - if Cecil discussed this with Rogers only and not someone officially associated with MSU, then there may not be a violation....however, if Roger's assertion is true that Cecil discussed money at the Hilton Garden Inn in Starkville in November '09 with MSU coaches, then Cam is done. I think it comes down to whether MSU coaches will confirm they had this discussion with Cecil. I think what may make this sticky is that MSU continued to recruit Cam after the supposed November '09 discussion, and they waited until January to make a report to the SEC. Per my understanding, they also didn't mention this meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn in their initial report. If they withheld information initially, they may have also committed a violation.

I was curious enough to see how close my memory was, so I researched it. It was actually 1979, and it was Auburn, not Alabama, that was on probation. Going into the last week of the season Alabama was 5-0 in the SEC, Georgia had completed its conference season at 5-1, and Auburn was 4-1. Georgia was 5-5 overall, with their final game against Georgia Tech. Alabama played Auburn. If Auburn won all three teams would have tied at 5-1 in the SEC, but Auburn's postseason ban would have reduced it to an Alabama-Georgia tie. Alabama and Georgia didn't play each other that year, and whatever the relevant tie-breaker was (possibly the team that had won the conference least recently; that was a common tie-breaker in that era) would have favored Georgia. So if Alabama and Georgia had both lost Georgia would have been the conference champion but with a 5-6 overall record. However, Alabama and Georgia both won. Alabama then beat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl to complete a 12-0 season and won the national championship according to both major polls; Georgia didn't play in a bowl game (back then there were many fewer bowl games and 6-5 teams stayed home).

That would have been pretty funny if Georgia had won the SEC with a 5-6 record. Pretty devastating for UGA, though. Go from possibly winning the SEC to missing a bowl game entirely in the span of one game.

That theory of events doesn't explain why Cam suddenly chose Auburn over his first choice, which was MS State. If that "the money was too much to pass up" statement was true, then obviously Cam knew.

I don't know, this just sounds like Cecil trying to deflect attention away from Cam and onto himself.

Saw this on Rivals and thought it was very good. This is about how MS State is behind all this.

MSU knew that Newton was tainted in November, but they continued to recruit him. Let’s assume - as we are told - that MSU did not “counter” or agree to pay anything. Why would they continue to recruit Cam and not immediately inform the SEC or the NCAA? Obviously, they believed that they could still get him. But how? What if MSU coaches told the Newtons that Cam now HAD TO GO TO MSU or else they would reveal that Cecil had solicited cash? Before you discount it completely, consider the timing and the circumstances.

MSU continues to recruit him until they lose him. They don’t report anything until after they lose him and even then they spoon feed the SEC and never tell them everything. Then, they wait until just before the season starts to reveal "specific" information, but even then they don't reveal the phone calls. Then they wait until the timing would be the most damaging for Auburn and Newton before releasing the details that should have been reported ONE YEAR EARLIER. And on top of that, someone releases information about Cam Newton’s academic cheating history at Florida. None of the information is coming from Auburn. All of the identified sources are associated with Mississippi State. Regardless of whether the information revealed is factually accurate, it is obvious that someone is deliberately releasing information in an attempt to cause the most possible damage to Cameron Newton, and all signs point to Mississippi State represenatives as the sources.

The decision to sit on the Newtons’ phone calls should prove to be an NCAA violation in and of itself. The decision to recruit a player who makes payment a condition of his signature may also be a violation. If nothing else, the decision to sit on the phone call information and then release it only when Auburn was postured to win a NC and Newton a Heisman Trophy will destroy any capital that MSU and Mullen may have had with the SEC and of the member institutions (except Florida). These are the most likely results, but this matter could prove to have unprecedented consequences for a head coach. Whoever is behind the release of Newton’s academic information is likely going to be indicted. Did MSU threaten the Newtons to reveal the solicitation and ruin Cam's college career if he didn't sign on the cowbell? We do know that MSU sat on the evidence and is now doing exactly that (ruining Newton's college career). Logic tells us that the Newtons will be giving anything to give to the FBI to deflect attention and reduce their exposure.

If a Cam really did tell an MSU coach that "the money was too much to pass up", then I agree that it sounds like Cecil is just trying to shield him...however MSU coaches may not be willing to go on the record with this information even even if Cam called them saying this. (how stupid would Cam have been to actually say this to an MSU coach, btw?)

Mississippi State responded in another statement Friday night from athletic director Scott Stricklin.

"MSU alerted the Southeastern Conference about the offer," the statement said. "MSU did not have any specific incriminating information about any other school, and thus could not provide any.

why would he tried to get money out of mississippi state? is their endowment even $200,000?

Just looked it up (was curious myself) and their athletic budget is 36 million, which is the lowest in the SEC.

If Iowa loses to these motherfuckers again...

They're not good this year, their weaknesses align with Iowa's strengths and there's no trap or letdown aspect to this game. Money guys and some analysts are going heavy on Iowa -10 and it's the lock of the week in a few places. Cover and them some.

Hopefully Northwestern doesn't get stupid lucky breaks like they always do against us.

What's going on with Iowa and Wisconsin the past 2 weeks? Both struggling again this week.

In fairness, Indiana has held their own in the conference this year. They're not a great team, but their passing game is good enough to give opposing secondaries fits.
