ESPN Radio in Dallas is saying the NCAA is going to suspend Cameron Newton in the next few hours.

This is being denied now, just turned on the radio and they were laughing about how something he said was taken out of context and caused a lot of talk on twitter.

Coach Chizik also denied this 'rumor'. It's very frustrating to me that everyone already believes Cam, his father, and/or Auburn Univeristy are guilty of wrong-doing that will require suspensions, vacating wins, etc. I believe AU wouldn't have allowed Cam to play this season if anything was going to result from the so far baseless accusations. they had a long time to review this prior to the season beginning.

And thought they could get away with it.

I'll indulge you. Let's say AU thought they could get away with it and payed for Newton's LOI...I would hope that AU administrators would have cut their losses and reported a violation after finding out that MSU had reported a similar shakedown if there were any merit to it.

It's not worth it to self report those kinds of violations.

I find it hard to believe there would be nothing to be gained by self reporting, cutting ties with the player before he ever stepped foot on the field. Can others confirm?

It may not be a coincidence that Auburn strangely went from having the 19th and 20th ranked recruiting classes in 08 and 09 to being 4th overall last year. Last year they managed to get the highest rated JUCO QB, the 2nd highest rated RB (Dyer), and the 3rd highest rated OL and top prospect overall from the state of MS (Shon Coleman). They also managed to get the highest rated prospect from the state of LA (Trovon Reed). They ended up getting 5 of the top 50 rated players and another that was rated 54th. All of this coming off a 7-5 season (3-5 SEC) where they barely beat Northwestern in their bowl game and with a mostly unknown head coach.

Chizik could just be a hell of a recruiter, but I do remember alot of people rubbing their heads last year over how badass Auburn's recruiting got all of the sudden.

sure, pile on. Everyone outside the SEC hates the SEC. Everyone inside the SEC hates each other....

Chizik was responsible for recruiting many of the defensive players that were on the 2004 undefeated Auburn team, and I believe he recruited well while he was a defensive coordinator at Texas. The Iowa State program that he left has blossomed somewhat this year, and many of Chizik's players are leading the way.

Curtis Luper and Trooper Taylor have been highly regarded as excellent recruiters throughout their careers and prior to arriving at AU. If there are any Oklahoma State fans out there, I'm sure they would agree about Luper and Taylor, and I'm sure the University of Tennessee fans out there would confirm that Taylor did a good job at UT. Is it hard to believe that defensive linemen are excited to play under former Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy winner, Tracy Rocker?

Now, let's address the fact that AU was thin at a lot of positions after Tubberville was relieved of his duties, and Chizik has been able to sell immediate playing time at AU to recruits.

..but by all means let's use every bit of psuedo-anecdotal "evidence" we can find to crucify Auburn University. Over the years, AU has consistently been a top 20 recruiter, and ol Tubbs even had a couple of top 10 classes. Is having a top 5 class when incoming freshmen are promised immediate playing time that big of a stretch?

Wow, dude. OMC's response did not sound biased against your school at all. When you typed this response, I pictured you shutting your eyes, blowing out your cheeks and plugging your ears, btw. Edited by Castro's Spray Chart

I don't think my response is worthy of a 'wow, dude.' He alluded to Auburn probably needing to cheat to obtain a top 5 recruiting class, and I provided a defense.

your post started with "pile on" and suggested omc (or others) was crucifying Auburn. Your post had a definite defensive tone. And yes, it's a little unusual that AU would suddenly land some real stud recruits coming off of last year. That doesn't mean they paid all their players, but it's interesting anyway.

Wow, he's been cheating for awhile.

Dude you need to chill out. I'm sure you guys are getting it from all sides now, but I'm not piling on Auburn here. In fact, Auburn is the school that I dislike the least in our western division. I've never had anything against them. I'm pretty much indifferent to Auburn and always have been. I have no general animosity toward you guys, so that's not where I'm coming from.

But it's pretty damn badass when your school can, coming off a mediocre year, get THE top rated player in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana (may as well throw in that y'all got the 4th rated player in Florida too). To recruit that well outside of your own state is pretty impressive. I know it's early in the recruiting process, but Auburn is back to 21st right now in the recruiting rankings.

Wouldn't it be more unusual for an SEC team of Auburn's stature NOT to have a highly rated class?

Eh, most SEC schools (other than Vandy or Kentucky) are usually going to be somewhere in the top 25, and Auburn being ranked 4th isn't shocking or anything because they've had numerous top 10 classes before, but going from 20th to 4th is a pretty impressive and sudden spike.

Is Auburn really a Cadillac program? I can't imagine anyone having them in their top 10 historically no matter the cut-off point.

They are probably just outside the top 10. But they played in and won a ton of huge games in the Tuberville era.

I definitely wouldn't put them there. The SEC Cadillac programs are pretty obviously LSU, Bama, and Florida

ESPN's rankings from a couple years ago put them 21st. 7th of current SEC teams

They've won the SEC once in the past 20 years.

There's a separate "BCS-era" ranking which is insider, but according to wiki, Auburn is ranked 22nd in it.

Just looked at the list and I don't really think 16-20 compare to Auburn when it comes to recent success and recruiting buzz.
