Thayer Evans at Foxsports.com is reporting that a source (Urban Meyer?) is indicating that Cam Newton was caught cheating multiple times academically when he was at Florida and faced possible expulsion when he transferred to Blinn College. Whether this is true or not won't affect Cam's eligibility this year with AU, but it's more fodder for the smear campaign. Academic records like these aren't public, and it's likely that someone from UF released this info if it's true.

We all knew that Cam had a questionable past, and this year has been about redemption for a kid who made some bad decisions at UF. If this particular story is confirmed by UF, then I don't have any issues with Heisman voters bypassing him. LaMichael James doesn't exactly have a sparkling record either though, so if voters decide to pass on Cam based upon further hearsay (name your source, Evans!), then let's go ahead and pass on James as well.

The Dallas Football Classic will now be called the TicketCity Bowl.

Why is this [expletive] on New Year's Day?

I have no idea but if either Texas or Michigan are in it I will be going.

They should pass both up and give it to Denard Robinson. :good:

If neither Newton nor James are selected, more likely, it would go to Kellen Moore. Bo Jackson (1985) was the last player to win the Heisman while playing on an unranked team.

I hope the Buckeye players are looking past Penn State as much as the Columbus sports media is.

Iowa is really stupidly doing the same thing with Northwestern, a team that has pretty much owned us this decade

After the Indiana game, I doubt they're overlooking NU.

After reading about this further, I now know there is no way that UF can legally confirm nor deny this story due to student privacy laws. I wouldn't be surprised if the story is true as Cam did leave Florida abruptly, but what's the purpose of the article if it can't be checked for accuracy? You either name your source or don't write this article, imo.

Are they looking ahead to Michigan? Or a BCS bowl? I know UM is the rivalry game, but they should know that if the last decade is any indication they are going to roll over UM so it shouldnt be that anticipated.

You shouldn't write an article unless you name your source?

Well the entire ESPN.com NBA reporting staff is axed then.

I wouldn't say that. Most people I talk to are a lot more worried about Northwestern than Ohio State.

Do you agree with these crazies? I mean, I know we've had lots of problems with mobile QBs in the past, but our line has never been this good. I'm much more worried about a team that can occasionally play some defense and get pressure with their front four.

I don't necessarily agree with them, but it is a bad matchup.

.....not exactly what I meant....it's more of an ethics question I guess. Students' academic records are protected by FERPA laws. Wouldn't the author's source have broken the law by providing such information? Should one write an article that slanders a kid when the information was obtained illegally (if true) and circumstances don't allow the accusations to be confirmed?

VolCub,

DeAnthony Arnett is apparently announcing his decision tomorrow night. I've heard he's likely to commit to Tennessee, but do you have any info on which way he's leaning?

Well the issue is with the source, he should be the one in trouble for violating the FERPA laws, not the journalist for reporting on it.

That is my problem with it. Should one be able to report upon information that is illegal to share while using an unnamed source as a shield from legal consequences? ...well, my other problem with it is that I'm a fan of the team that it indirectly, negatively portrays....but that's obvious to everyone.

I guess there's twp sides to the issue. If the reporter trusts his source, he is reporting what he believes to be facts. The source is breaking the law and is being protected by the reporter who doesn't name his source. In this case, it's a bad situation for Newton. The accusations cannot be proven or disproven because of confidentiality laws. It's innuendo, even if it is true.

On the other hand, I'm not sure where to draw the line. Should news people not report on stuff illegally obtained? I guess that's a sketch ethics issue.

all the goodwill Turner Gill earned by miraculously beating a terrible CU team will go away when Nebraska is up by 40 at halftime.

nebraska w/o taylor martinez isn't all that impressive. iowa state outgained them, out-first downed them and handled them pretty well.

iowa state is also 17 pts better than us (not counting the late td.) also, i think TM is back for the game.
