After being in on Sheldon Richardson for four years, he decommited from Mizzou today and is going to USC. We can't match that Kiffin Cash.

Well, now we can make fun of him for being an illiterate ignoramus, at least.

I'm not saying it's not a loss, but I think MU's recruiting is good enough that you'll be able to find a serviceable replacement. He sounds dumb enough to be a potential problem anyway.

The most frustrating thing is we basically sunk 4-5 years into this guy for nothing. I'm also not entirely impressed with this year's class, and he was kind of the guy who we thought we could count on coming in and making an impact for a year or two. Oh well.

What happens if, theoretically, a team wins a conference and is not bowl eligible? For instance, a team finishes 5-7 overall, but all five of those wins come in conference and the rest of the conference is horrendous?

I would assume the team still goes to a bowl, but is that really addressed since it's an incredibly fluky thing?

I actually was reading this the other day. The win total is one route to becoming eligible, winning a conference is the other.

Under current regulations, in order for this to occur, a team must have at least 6 wins, which may include one win against a Division I FCS scholarship-awarding[1] opponent, or win their conference, and the team must not be on probation.

Thanks. That scenario probably almost never happens (I don't recall it happening) so it's pretty moot, but interesting nonetheless.

Hearing that sources within Auburn's camp are saying that at a press conference this afternoon, Chizik will announce that Newton isn't going to play on Saturday.

Vegas apparently figured out this was going to happen days ago because they suspended the line for the Aub-GA game.

That last point is quite possible, however, they may have just realized the future was so cloudy that it wasn't worth keeping a line on a game that could swing so huge before Saturday.

Just watched that 30 for 30 about Marcus Dupree. That is just unbelievably tragic. Amazing documentary.

That was really good. Surprised I had never even heard of him. His high school films were beyond ridiculous. I heard Gerry DiNardo saying the other day that if recruiting was just between coaches and the athletes, the vast majority of corruption would be eliminated. This was another prime example.

That "man of god" Rev. Fairley is such an ultimate piece of isht. What a snake in the grass. When Marcus called back home feeling sad that Coach Switzer was getting on his ass, a REAL father figure in his life would have told him to man up and take his lumps like everyone else.

Especially when he knew it was going to be 1.5 years of sitting out before he could play at USM and the NFL was 2.5 years away. What a slimeball. He just had no one with any logic or sensible understanding of football around him. Too bad his high school coach or someone didn't have his ear.

I thought it was kind of hilarious Switzer ripped him after the Fiesta Bowl loss where he had 17 carries for 239 yards because Dupree was overweight.

And I agree, that was a good one.

Didnt he do almost all of that in the first half and was pretty much out the 2nd half? I didnt watch the documentary, but from personal memory I do remember Marcus Dupree was probably the first player that I can remember whose recruitment was a national story. Before him you just didnt hear that much about recruiting.

I have seen a couple of the 30 for 30s and have to admit that they are well done. Though I dont watch Nascar I thought the one on Tim Richmond was fascinating. It was so sad how people who had AIDS were treated back in the 80s

If MSU coaches are willing to, on the record, testify that Cecil Newton tried to shake them down, then I'm assuming a recording of Cecil himself speaking, concrete evidence wouldn't be needed for Cam to lose his eligibility. ....where are you hearing something about a press conference? ....haven't heard that yet.

Seen several people talking about it on Rivals, saw it on a twitter of a writer that covers the SEC, and also had a professor friend of mine at Auburn text me saying it was all over campus right now. So nothing official yet.

Yeah that was great. I guess those 12.9 ypc weren't enough...

He was such a stud. He only started 7 regular season college games and in that span put up 1,144 yards and 13 TD's with 7.8 ypc.

The Best That Never Was is an incredibly appropriate title.

dunno if this has been posted already. too lazy to check.

Rogers said he was referred to a Mississippi State booster named Bill Bell. Rogers said he left Bell a message telling him he was with Cecil Newton, who wanted to know if the deal was going to happen.

Bell, when contacted Thursday night by ESPN.com, confirmed Cecil Newton did ask for money in exchange for Cam Newton signing with Mississippi State. Bell said he was contacted by the NCAA about the matter and spoke to an investigator earlier this week.

"That's all I want to say about it at this point," Bell said.

He should have gone to Texas ;-)

One of the Auburn beat writers just published an article a few minutes ago indicating Cam is still on track to start tomorrow, so I'm thinking the whole press conference thing is just another rumor. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2010/11/quarterback_cam_newton_still_o.html

I believe the rumor started, because the Auburn athletic dept. issued a 'no comment' today regarding Newton's status for the game tomorrow. Some took it to mean that his status was about to change i guess.

yeah, i posted a non-espn version of that article earlier. Bell is just another booster, and i guess he is the go-to guy when recruits ask MSU alumni for cash. I don't think Bell's statements would be all that damning to Cam or AU unless he has a recording of Cecil directly asking him for money. If MSU's coaches at some point confirm Cecil directly asked them about money, then maybe that would be enough though...??

I wonder if this will be in the back of pollster's minds when they make out their ballots. A few people might push TCU ahead of Auburn just on the chance that Newton will be suspended by the time the national championship game happens.

If Cam becomes ineligible prior to the NCG, then Auburn should have to vacate all of the wins for this season....so they wouldn't be playing in the NCG anyway. that said, i doubt TCU jumps AU if AU beats Georgia tomorrow.

I doubt a decision would be made in time to affect the title game, but the looming potential of ineligibility and a possibly vacated BCS champion might be enough to get some voters to go with someone other than Auburn.

Bond and Rogers are supposed to be interviewed by the FBI next Tuesday per one of the articles I read and will turn over supporting evidence to them at that time. If they have evidence that is truly damning to Cam, then I imagine he'll be ruled ineligible soon after that.

It may move faster, but the NCAA is generally incredibly slow about making decisions. It'll be interesting to see how quickly they move here.

I remember once many years ago (in the 80s or 90s) there was a chance late in the season for Georgia to be SEC champion with an overall losing record, but it didn't happen. I believe there was a team higher in the standings but on probation and ineligible for a bowl game (it may have been Alabama, but I'm not positive).

Why is the FBI involved in the Newton thing??

the reason i have read is "to find out if young men are being shopped to colleges."...seems strange to me as well. I'd prefer they worry more about national security and such.
