Go get em' on Wednesday. This is still a .500ish team, if we can stay in it long enough to make a move for a guy or two around the deadline (or get someone to come up and be productive Cashner, Castro, etc.) we could sneak in as the WC. Even though this is getting ugly. Just leave Samardzija in and don't wear out the bullpen.

there will be no more deals. ricketts is a giant turd. now we're going to get to see a real tightwad own our team, those days of a top 3 payroll will be long gone as soon as he can shed some contracts.

Obviously it's just one game and it wouldn't be a big deal if it was game 64 or something, but I wondered why all spring I wasn't excited at all for baseball season, and part of me thought it was because I didn't think the Cubs were going to be good at all this year. But I shook that off thinking that its just me being pessimistic. Watching this game isn't calming my fears. Here were the things I was worried about:

1. Starting pitching

2. Soto not regaining 2008 form

3. Soriano not bouncing back

4. Fontenot continuing to suck

5. The Bullpen being bad

So far so bad.

Hopefully games 2-162 will be better.

It's not fun to get whalloped on Opening Day, now I feel bad for what we did every year in the early to mid Oughts on Opening Day. Mets, Reds and Diamondbacks, I am sorry.

The bullpen wasn't bad, just Shark. Marshall was great and Russell did well, too.

and this is how it ends, on the first day.

remember, you're cub fans and nothing good ever happens to the cubs.

Yeah, but that's only because you're one too.

i wouldn't box me in by simply classifying me as a cubs fan. i have a few other teams that nothing good ever happens to, as well.

In bed.

why doesn't this stuff ever happen for us instead of to us?

because most organizations don't waste $10m on wide receivers? samardzija got one of the biggest contracts awarded to players in the amateur draft. sometimes the cubs are unlucky but usually managment just does dumbass things that predictably blows up in their face.

Do you think Rickets is sitting there saying "Holy [expletive] what did I just do?" and then remembering first gate of the year is only 7 days away.

He won't do that until it's mid-June and 15,000 show up to Wrigley to watch them fall 20 games back.

It's not the money that's spend, it's how that money is spent.

I'd be just fine with shedding some of the high contracts if the money was spent better.

I couldn't care less if the payroll is high if we have smart people spending the money. Our sky high payroll has won us exactly 0 playoff games in 6 years.

This. Jeff had a brighter future in the NFL yet the Cubs thought he was a MLB pitcher. At least they made him a rich one.

A bad game shouldn't change your expectations for the team.

But anytime the Cubs lose and the Cardinals win, the playoff odds get a little lower.

Has a team ever came from one back after one game to win it all?

I'm hoping they are saying, "[expletive] this. I won't put up with this."

Yes. But the odds are a little lower than if they weren't a game back.

Technically they only spent like $750,000 on him out of the draft. He was already a pro when they gave him the big deal.

Obviously it's only one game, so sample size, but the bullpen was good outside of Shark. Soto did hit a ball hard, Jones made a pretty decent play. Soriano started slow in 06/07 but he just looks lost, I have no faith in Fontenot and the rotation should be slightly above average, but the implosion potential of that and the bullpen is scary.

Is it beyond the pale to suggest sulley off himself for the greater good of Chicago fans?

wow, dude, you're a real piece of work

[expletive] you

But you're the centerpiece of the cosmic conspiracy to punish Chicago sports fans. I think it's pretty selfish of you to continue punishing us when the obvious solution is in place.
