According to the Trib, it's gonna happen...

He insisted he will make his next start later this week, and most likely will be named the Cubs' fourth or fifth starter at that time.

The article talks about how he made one little adjustment and it's been working well for him (suuure...). He credits the turnaround to Greg Maddux. Oh and also he's said he's had a couple of bad years since his mother wasn't around to be there with him, and the good news is his mother is flying from Venezuela very soon.

"The last year my mother was here was in '07, and after that I have brutal years," he said. "I'm going to be 31 years old in April, but it's hard for me to be away from my mom. Even when I have a bad game, she keeps me loose."

Honestly, whatever. I personally wouldn't have made the move, but if he kills us for a couple of starts in April, most likely the Cubs will pull the plug when Lilly returns anyways.

This would upset me if I felt Gorzelanny and/or Samardzija were better options.

Luckily, Lilly seems to be progressing more quickly than anticipated in his rehab.

I don't see why we shouldn't give him a shot. He has looked better (hard not to) this Spring and could be a good 5th. While Lilly is out we should give him a chance.

Silva in the rotation, Wells likely to regress, while Lilly and our bullpen remain huge question marks. I'm usually one of the more optimistic people on this board, but there is no way we're making a playoff run with this pitching. Hopefully we can stay in contention until July so Jim can perhaps pull off a trade similar to the Harden one...

But lately I've been preparing myself for the realistic possibility of a complete overhaul. Our big hitters are getting old and the window will be closing soon, if it hasn't already. The good news is that we have a solid farm system now, so there is hope for the future. Unless Hendry can find a way to determine that we're one trade away from being a World Series contender, it would probably be best just to hold onto all our prospects and let this year and next year happen as they happen.

Whew! I'm glad you're not a pessimist.

I'm not ready to give up on Silva yet. He had one terrible outing this spring and then with the help of Rothschild seemed to find his sinker again. We all know that he isn't going to be a top of the rotation pitcher in this league, but there was a time where he was valuable as a back of the rotation guy.

If they want to start out with Silva as the 5th starter, IM OK with that, especially considering all the money hes owed.

Summary: The Cubs owe him money whether or not he plays, so decisions on his playing time should be made independently of that fact.

Agreed, but that hasn't been Jim's m.o. at all.

That's generally not most GMs' M.O. Though it's the right call.

To me it does not make sense to have Marshall and Gorz in the long role at all together. Gorzelany has more potential than Silva I believe and should be the guy who gets more starts throughout the season.

Keep in mind Lilly is out for a month, so there are 2 spots in the rotation to fill. Right now Z, Dempster and Wells are assured spots. Marshall, Shark, Gorz and Silva are fighting for the other two. So even if Silva gets one of those spots, it doesn't mean Gorz and Marshall will both be in the bullpen together.

My guess is that Marshall and Silva will get the two spots until Lilly is healthy and then whichever of the former two is pitching worse will be the player that is moved to the pen (thus giving us Z, Lilly, Demp, Wells, Silva/Marshall). That's just a guess, though.

I don't know how much Hendry will be weighing that on Silva. Yeah, he has taken sunk costs into account in the past, but these are really Bradley's, not Silva's. He's not really on the hook for signing Silva to a huge contract, since it was a loss-cutting move.

That said, a few decent starts in April would be way more than I could have hoped for out of him.

Yeah, I don't know if Hendry is definitely going to start Silva all year simply because he's being paid a lot of money. He may well get the first opportunity, but he'll need to take advantage of that opportunity.

Meh. We're stuck with him regardless. I'd rather see Gorzelanny get a shot. But let's give the ball to Silva and see if he can try and not be useless for 2-3 starts. If he holds up or fails miserably, it's still a very short experiment with Lilly ahead of schedule on his rehab.

It's not a short experiment. He's going to start out as the 4th starter, and if Lilly returns, he'll just be the 5th starter. He's in the rotation, and given his paycheck and veteran status, he's going to be given more leeway than he should get. If he fails miserably maybe he'll be gone shortly, but if he only fails marginally, he'll be here forever.

Yeah...I sure as hell don't see how Silva has "earned" anything.

You don't think he has out played Shark to this point? Silva has basically had two bad innings all of spring training. He has shown that his sinker is more effective and he has shown some glimmer that he can be somewhat effective as a 4-5 starter. I was as big on Shark as anybody prior to spring training, but based on his outings so far he hasn't shown any improvement and I'm coming around to agreeing with Gooney and others that think his window of opportunity is quickly closing.

Marshall and Gorzelanny are starting options as well.

Out played in what...11 innings or something? As others mentioned, those two aren't the only options anyway. Personally I'd probably give Gorzelanny the first shot, but cerainly both he and Marshall have done more than Silva to "earn" the position in actual meaningful games.
